So the news all of Ireland was dreading-Liam Miller is out of le crunch.Apparently champagne corks are popping as we speak in Paree, with a party organised for the champs elysees tonight. And to think we were so close, but upon losing arguably the most influential mid-fielder since Roy Keane we may as well not turn-up. fredrickwood (Roscommon) - Posts: 2871 - 11/11/2009 13:54:30 481116 Link 0 |

Duffy, where have you been on this debate the past few weeks? 1. We drew more games than we won and needed several extremely favourable refereeing (and FIFA) decisions and lucky goals (many against the run of play) to get those results. Going through the group unbeaten has been way overrated - our only wins were scrappy one-goal wins vs. Georgia and the mighty Cyprus. We had the second lowest points total of all 9 second place teams. Remember, it's 3points for a win, only 1 for a draw. 2. We got a handy group - there is no denying Bulgaria were rubbish, and they had to play large parts of the campaign without their two best players, Berbatov and Martin Petrov. All we had to do to qualify for the playoffs was to do better than Bulgaria (just like all you have to do to avoid relegation from the Premiership is to finish 17th). 3. We were completely outplayed by lesser teams for large parts of many of the qualifiers, and we surrendered leads time and time again due to our inability to keep the ball. 4. We play the most terrible, boring brand of football of any team in the world that's not called "Rangers". This might be fair enough vs. Italy, but 0 goals in 180mins vs. Montenegro? Come on. We have a team of Premiership footballers, there is no reason we can't put a few passes together and still not concede goals every time we are forced to defend. 5. Any manager was bound to look good after Staunton. Trap has simply sorted out our defensive shambles and made us more organized, which is the very minimum a manager should have been expected to do. 6. Trap has a terrible record as an International manager, and a dodgy recent record in club management. His major successes in club management (which is not the same as international management anyway) were in a different era, decades ago. 7. Trap has developed this extremely rigid defensive system, and we have no Plan B should we go a goal behind and need to score. Players who could have made a difference off the bench, if not started, have been excluded from the squad. 8. Trap attends games involving his players extremely rarely, and even then only if they are on in London. This is more convenient for him and means he can spend more time relaxing in Italy. 9. Trap doesn't seem to know what is going on with his players as regards injuries, and recently incorrectly claimed that Steven Reid's "cartilage is gone" and suggested his career could be over. 10. But worst of all: Trap has allowed a personal grudge to get in the way of his doing his job - selecting the best Irish players, something he is paid millions to do. Andy Reid should be the first midfielder on his teamsheet on current form. Liam Miller and Shane Long who have had to pull out of the France game had no business being in this squad in the first place - why are no replacements being called up? I'm really sick of this debate at this stage, and of all the same cheerleaders who keep attacking me with stuff like "Why don't you just get behind the team?", "Trap knows what he's doing", "But we are unbeaten, we are in the playoffs - what more could you ask for?" etc. etc. Anyone who knows anything about soccer can see that Trap's squad selection and the exclusion of Andy Reid is harming our chances of qualification. Many experienced ex-internationals and analysts have come out and expressed their surprise at Trap's stubbornness (and I'm not talking about Eamonn Dunphy). I am dismayed and disillusioned at the FAI's premature decision to award Trap another contract and no longer enjoy watching Ireland play. I will be supporting the team on Saturday and want us to qualify as much as anyone else, but I am a realist and can see France winning easily over the two legs. nocky (Wexford) - Posts: 2059 - 12/11/2009 10:52:31 481945 Link 0 |

I know this thread is a bit of a laugh, but jesus some of you are fierce cynical. Liam Miller is a hard-working footballer who gives his all for Ireland and I'm sure is very priviliged for the honour. Breffni40 (Cavan) - Posts: 12484 - 12/11/2009 13:10:26 482071 Link 0 |
