New players for Meath!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Off the 2006-2008 minors, surely Michael Newman from kilmainham is the stand out player to make it through to the senior panel in the next couple of years. Also young Damian Carroll might be a good shout too? Both players from outside of the leading clubs, who shouldn't be overlooked just because of who they play for.

12Royal The only two changes I'd make are to full-back and centre-forward.In my opinion there has to be a better full-back than Kevin Reilly in Meath,he's been roasted on numerous occassions, and Cian Ward destroys him any time they play against each other. Also, instead of Anthony Moyles in centre-half forward,I'd pick a faster younger player maybe like Jamie whats his name from Na Fianna or maybe Brian Sheridan.

See, there's not too many new players on that side 12Royal and I think if you actually examine the current panel under O'Brien we shouldn't be too desperate for new blood. Some of the players that have been mentioned, Alan Nestor for example have been blooded under Coyle. Brian Sheridan is one player I would like to see tried out at full-forward during the league. Create some competition between himself and James Queeney for the no. 14 jersey and that would free up Joe Sheridan and Shane O'Rourke to operate around midfield. The problem I have with Byrne and Sheridan both starting in the half-forward line is that they're both auxillary midfielders, which only leaves us with Stephen Bray to supply some much needed creativity. Think back to the Kerry game, we crowded midfield with ball-winners, (Sheridan, Byrne, Burke, Meade etc.) and then couldn't provide a decent ball to the full-forward line. I would love to see a more natural footballer starting here, either Caomhin King or Chris O'Connor. They'll win breaks and sweep in front of the half-backs but also provide the cute pass and chip in with the odd point. I think Reilly's a good footballer but I agree that we should be grooming younger players for that role. I'd rather see Moyles starting at centre-back and dropping back to protect the full-backs under the high-ball. No-one here has mentioned any young candidates for full-back outside the panel which is a bit worrying. Someone on these boards mentioned it once but has Brian Meade ever been tried out at full-back? I really think that Meade and McGuinness could potentially make solid full-backs, dependable enough to at least cover for injuries.

Any full-backs there Benny? Skelly's a wing-back by trade and Lynch is a corner-back I think...

I would defo have Alan Nestor,Paddy Smyth and the likes on the squad.I would have nestor, smyth,Brian Sheridan,Barry Regan,King,Farrel,Menton from ashbourne,David Bray,Niall Mclouglin, and David Lyons From Senchalstown as reserve goalkeeper.I think with the panel Meath have at there deposal they can take Dublin and Kildare,Offaly, and Laois down in Lienster.

I thought the point of this thread was that fans would like to see some relatively new faces thrown into the mix or that we'd hopefully see some new lads tried out in different positions.

Here's an experimental side I'd try out in the O'Byrne cup or in challenge games:

1. D. Lyons

2. A. Johnson 3. B. Meade 4. M. Burke

5. G. Reilly 6. E. Reilly 7. T. Skelly

8. M. Kennedy 9. B. Menton

10. D. Bray 11. S. O'Rourke 12. C. O'Connor

13. J. Queeney 14. B. Sheridan 15. A. Nestor

We know that McGill and King can play in the corner at a push but I'd like to see Mickey Burke groomed for the corner-back role. Think this would be his best position on the seniors. I also feel Moyles is wasted in the full-back line. Move him back to centre-back. How many more years is he going to give, who'll cover for Reilly in the future should any injuries recur? Brian Meade has most of the qualities you'd look for in a great full-back. We'd miss his industry out the field but Joe and O'Rourke should be pushing for those midfield spots now.

Some of the Summerhill lads have to get more of a look in. How did Brian Ennis do when he was playing centre-back at under-21? Harrington will probably move out here eventually and McGuinness continues to improve but, doesn't hurt to have other options. Eoin Reilly could challenge for this spot, he's played half-back before if I'm not mistaken.

I'd like to see David Bray tried out on the forty. He has the talent be a playmaker in the mould of his brother and we're sadly lacking in creativity out the field. O'Rourke on top of the midfield diamond, enough said. He could alternate with Joe at full-forward during the championship, a tactic that could cause a lot of problems for defenders.

Personally I'd start either King or O'Connor on the 40 when the summer comes around. Either one can win breaks from kick-outs and sweep up behind midfield but they also offer a much greater threat on the counter than Peadar Byrne does.

Persisting with the three man full-forward line, Queeney tucking in next to Sheridan gives us a serious aerial threat and a similar shaped alternative to O'Briens favoured Ward/Farrell/Sheridan combination.

As a spectator of the inter relegation game, it was a poor affair but threw up some decent candidates for a challenge or O'Byrne cup game ,Ger Farrelly James Finnerty and Wayne Donegan, the last two having plenty experince with St.Pats college in Navan and probably an All Ireland colleges medal or two between them and Farrelly who played with Meath U-21's last year at full back and also Terry Skelly desreves another shot, big strong athletic fella with plenty of ability.Just a thought!
