they mortimers went to jarlaths... jarlaths dont have to name off every one of their successful sports stars otherwise we'd be here all day. tradition talks at the end of the day stop tryin to look for excuses because theres an empty space in the cabinet for hogan. maybe a few flowers might fill that gap for ye

St.Marys is a fine school i'm sure but some contributors are over stating it's prowess at the highest levels in the major sports in Irish schools. The following stats will confirm thes assertions.

Number of Dr.Croke Cups won by St Marys - 0 (Zero) Hurling
Number of Hogan Cups won by St Marys - 0 (Zero) Football
Number of College of Science Cups won by 0 (Zero) Athletics

Midfieldmaster, Trevor Morimer only transferred over to Jarlaths from Marys in February of his leaving cert year. Conor Mortimer transfered over to Jarlaths from Marys in fourth year. A few days ago i posted a list of players who had '''''transferred''''' over to Jarlaths from Marys and indeed other schools, stating that it was hardly due to the better weather down the N17, but the editor of this board did'nt post it up.

I played on the marys team the year Connor mortimer left to join Jarlaths. We played then in Connaught Semi Final in Tuam Stadium and the difference on the day was Mort. If he stayed in Marys that year there is no doubt in my mind we would of got to an all ireland Final that year. 10years later this is still a bitter and sad moment for me..
Jarlaths have done so much for football in this county but Marys have also contributed to Galway Gaa in General. in a big way. Two Fantastic schools that most counties would love to have as there own. It was a pleasure to attend School in Marys and i am sure the same can be said for those who attended Jarlaths.
Great Links Between the two Schools. I hope the Tradition of one School hosting the other Schools team for dinner after Senior championship matches continues.

With the current crop of players,st. mary's college galway will be a long time waiting for hogan cup glory i can assure you.if they make the connacht decider this year i'd be extremely surprised but then again,we're not going through a golden era of connacht schools football.the likes of Maughan,O'Laoi, & Madden wouldn't lace the boots of the class of 04' or 05'.we're talking about a crop of players that have since gone on to flourish for the county at u21 & senior level.Gareth Bradshaw,Paul Conroy,Eddie Hoare,Eoin Concannon & Conor Healy to name but a few.hopefully the class of 09' will not be a gauge for the next generation because one would fear that if it is,the wait will go on for the counties first all ireland title since 2001.

05 was a huge missed opportunity for Mary's. They had the best team in colleges football that year but didn't really perform in the final against Knockbeg. Still could have won it on the day though.

Look, im not trying to mess with Jarlaths great legacy, midfieldmaster. What Im trying to say is that St.Marys deserves a lot more credit, for producing some great Atheletes. Everywhere you look its all Jarlaths this and Jarlaths that. Marys has contributed a lot to the development of great athletes who have gone on to represent Galway in Hurling, Football and Soccer. and not just football. Since the turn of the century city clubs and conemara clubs have started to come to the fore in club football ie Moycullen winning the All Ireland Intermediate, Salthill Senior All Ireland, St. James just won their 3rd Minor Title recently, St. Micheals have won a lot aswell. Nearly all the players from these clubs attended or still attend St.Marys college. Castelgar and Liam Mellows have also won a few Mionor and U-21 titles aswell. Most of these players also attended St.Marys college. St.Marys college has contributed as much as St.Jarlaths to the development of Galway atheltes and over a wider range of sports, so give the college the respect it derseves, thats all im saying. this message is directed toward midfieldmaster

*Christian Lomboto (Eire Og/ Father Griffins) and *Tony Ward (St. Michaels) (Both of Ted Webb '09). Much of this Mary's team is not in their final minor year, you can expect to see many of them playing county minor next year if not this year even.

Saint Marys have a proud tardition of hurling and its sad to see some negative vibes about their hurlers. They may not have the callibre of hurler entering the college that they have had in the past and this is mainly due to the fact that the boarding side of the college is no longer. Another factor is that many of the students from Clarenbridge, Turloughmore and Athenry are going to their local colleges and Vocational schools as it is much more accessible than in years gone by. Even so, Marys have contested the last three Senior B finals winning one and the last four junior B (under 16) finals winning all four. Whats apparent from this is that Marys tradition of producing quality hurlers lives on and contributes in a major way to the minor and senior teams that represent our county. Go ndeiridh an t-adh libh. Cholaiste mhuire abu.
