John 'Jobber' Mcgrath easily the best and greatest, anyone who ever seen says the same (Jimmy Magee is always mentioning him for example). Irish people seem to have very short memories and only regard people who they have seen or are frest in the memory as been great. Remember they voted for John Hume as the greatest Irish Person and Padraig Harrington as the greatest sports person! people such as Daniel O'Connell and sports people form before World War 11 were'nt even considered. Also how does someone define greatness?
Westmeath greatest footballer is a more difficult question, where your have Carley, Dolan, Flanagan, Dunican, Finneran, Eviers (westmeath man who played for Galway and minor for westmeath), I also remember reading about a priest ( a westmeath man) who became a legend in Meath, as examples. Going on hear-say and from what I've read, heared, and seen; I would have it as a toss up between Carley (St. Marys, St. Vincents, Downs, and St. Lomans) and Dunican (Rosemount and Maryland). Many who have seen the later are now quite old or sadly passed, but he was meant to be a legend!
