BALLAGHBUCK, you went to the trouble of creating a topic on Galway football for 2010 and picked your team, and you picked a n other at number 7,surely you could have put someone in that position after you going to all the trouble of starting this,UNBELIEVEABLE. reteoir (Galway) - Posts: 197 - 30/10/2009 11:00:07 470597 Link 0 |

Not a bad team, anyone else think Paul Conroy is not up to senior football, saw him play this year and he's no where near county standard! Gaillimh (Galway) - Posts: 191 - 30/10/2009 12:31:01 470717 Link 0 |
What are u on about Paul Conroy is wel fit for senior football he is up there with the best players we have at moment. AllStar00 (Galway) - Posts: 146 - 30/10/2009 13:58:02 470835 Link 0 |
Paul Conroy is one of the best under age footballers galway have, the lad is only 20 years of age, he'll be playin wing forward this year and this will suit him alot better. Fballfan (Galway) - Posts: 83 - 30/10/2009 14:09:31 470855 Link 0 |
Gaillimh what club are you from, and have you a clue about football? Noticed you havent apologised for your INCORRECT and scurrulous attack on St.James in another thread. Now your moaning about Paul Conroy, captain of our victorious All Ireland winning minor team, and a natural footballing talent, who will no doubt physically mature and benefit under Joe Kernan's guidance.Didn't agree with him being thrown in at midfield in Croker against Kerry last year, too much too soon at that point, and he is still finding his feet at senior level, but after kicking two sweet points against Donegal,he shouldn't have been substituted.A sweet stricker of the ball off either foot,he can kick points from distance. (remember who kicked the winning point against Mayo last year!)Midfield isn't his best position, but half forwardline is perfect for him.Definitely one of the County's more promising players and needs all the experience he will get playing inter County senior football.Has started for Connacht also.Should be a permanent fixture in the county team for next ten years. carrigrua (Galway) - Posts: 363 - 30/10/2009 14:11:06 470858 Link 0 |
Galway Football 2010.... KK, your team selection is along expected lines, however and the sooner its realised in Galway, the bulk of the players you have selected have achieved nothing at senior level over the past number of years, so rolling them out again in 2010 is unlikely to bring any success either..Lets face facts, we hav'nt gotten past the quarter finals since 2001.....The likes of Blake, Coleman, Bane, Conroy are way off intercounty standard, though Conroy might yet deliver something....its time to clear the panel out, and start again with a 3 to 4 year plan, on a team built around the likes of Tom Fahy, Eddie Hoare, Conor Doherty, Toto Griffen, Jonny Ryan, Greg Rogan, Eoin Concannon, Damian Reilly, David Reilly, John O Brien, Greg Higgins, Colin Forde, Damien Reddington, Damien Dunleavy. A new team should be given time to develop, and with some of the aforementioned players, backed up with Bradshaw, Armstrong, Meehan, and Nicky Joyce we could do so better...however i would'nt hold out much hope of a major rebuilding program happening, so in my view it will be more of the same in 2010 Brendan Bowens (Galway) - Posts: 164 - 30/10/2009 14:25:00 470880 Link 0 |
good man Gaillimh, you saw Paul Conroy play this year did you!!! What did you think of the 1-7 he scored in the Intermediate league match out in Oughterard, some performance wasn't it? The goal he scored that day was pure class.Nice goal he scored against Dublin in Pearse stadium too wasn't it.Remember last year and the injury time winner he kicked against Mayo in the league, and did the same in championship, not bad for a young 18 year old. carrigrua (Galway) - Posts: 363 - 30/10/2009 14:43:02 470905 Link 0 |
Carraig rua: Fair enough your a James man and have to support your own.... I have to agree Conroy is a good player and played ok last season wing forward but was totally out of it at midfield. He really needs to step it up if Galway are going to contest for SAM 2010! Gaillimh (Galway) - Posts: 191 - 30/10/2009 15:48:38 470995 Link 0 |

Gaillimh...It is not only Conroy that needs to step up, at least he is young enough to try..but the above teams, My God..Not more of the same this year..Trying the same thing over and over and expecting different outcome. SAMMYTHEBULL (Galway) - Posts: 1646 - 30/10/2009 19:25:35 471283 Link 0 |

My ideal team for Galway would be this: 1. Adrian Faherty 2. Damien Burke 3. Finian Hanley 4. Kieran Fitzgerald 5. Alan Burke 6. Niall Coyne 7. Gary Sice 8. Gareth Bradshaw 9. Joe Bergin 10. Paul Conroy 11. Paraic Joyce * 12. Fiachra Breathnach * 13. Sean Armstrong 14. Micheal Meehan (C) 15. Cormac Bane Subs: GK: Paul Doherty Backs: Darren Mullahy, Diarmud Blake, Tom Fahy, etc. Mids: Greg Rogan, Toto or Greg Higgins Forwards: Nicky Joyce, Coady, Conor Doherty, Damien Dunleavy, Matthew Clancy Greg Rogan is a fabulous player and should be given a chance, but i doubt he will be thrown straight in so could well be a good impact sub with Bergin moving to full forward when he comes on maybe. * Fiachra Breathnach is some grafter and is very fit and seen as Naomh Anna are gone senior I think he will start. He is still young and is physical aswell which is what Sean O'Domhnaill wants. * PJ at 11 for one last year i think, as we are trying to build a new team we still need his experience but he cant there for any longer than one more year, we need some No.11 that can change the game like Alan Brogan for Dublin & you could always switch him into the corner for Armstrong. Footballman22, in response to your post i think you have picked a good team, and obviously u know ur football by nominating the likes of Silke, De Paor, Cummins and Toto who all should be given a chance However i disagree with your reckoning that the selectors go through a long process to get the best players avaliable and players who don't make the cut clearly have not played well enough. I dont believe that they spend enough time at club games across all grades to really get a idea of who is performing. The notion raises the following points: 1. Does Alan Burke ever have a bad game for Corofin? Yet last season when he was brilliant all year, he was not given a chance 2. Greg Rogan was not given any chance whatsoever last year, after having a season when he was inspirational for St. Michaels at no.11 3. C De Paor has not been given any chance to show what he can do either despite being one of his clubs best players day in day out 4. Where did Niall Coyne (who is a good player) display a line of form to warrant his automatic selection at corner back? It certainly was'nt for Carna Cashel as he was'nt playing in that position for them....the decisions made by the selectors/management on the sideline after Nialls unfortunate injury were not based on any logic known to man. Had the selection commitee been watching out for corner backs showing good form at the business end of the club championship then surely Kieran McGrath or even Gary Delaney would have emerged as contenders, not to mention Fitzy, a top drawer defender who was sitting on the bench 5. Mullaghy was very good in the initial league games he was given, yet he was dropped off the team for no apparent reason 6. After taking the early stages of the league off last year due to work commitments, Niall Coleman was parachuted in for the final game against Kerry despite a lack of training. This was blatently unfair on the likes of Mark Lydon, who had been training and not to mention Greg Higgins who had'nt even been called up despite very good form for Corofin. Prior to this Tom Hughes of Killerin had been given a chance, with his opportunity hardly arising out of a red hot streak of good club form 7. Was Gary O Donnell blazing a trail for St. Colemans, or NUIG to such startling effect that it warranted automatic promotion straight up to midfield on the Galway team? I dont think u'l disagree with any of the above points? Brendan Bowens (Galway) - Posts: 164 - 31/10/2009 22:38:56 472021 Link 0 |
None of the selections posted here have a midfield pairing capable of lifting Sam theres our problem.Ballaghbuck naming A.N.Other at no 7.....hiliarous! Barnowl94 (Galway) - Posts: 3150 - 31/10/2009 23:58:49 472061 Link 0 |

In response to Brendan Bowens, your points are valid and well educated. However, the point i'm trying to make is that selectors can't just not pick players because they have played poorly at inter-county level previously, if their playing well for their club they can't just be ignored. i.e Gary O'Donnell was very good for Tuam throughout the year. The point I'm making about the selectors is, for example, people talk about Galways midfield problems, which would suggest a new midfield s needed, however if Joe Bergin does'nt play midfield for Galway aftre his year for M/M, eyebrows will be raised, however Joe has never really been outstanding for Galway i lar na pairce. Therefore selectors have a hard choice to make. Niall Coyne has been treated unfairly by previous management, players should be played in their best positions, and the full back line is not where a player with the qualities of Niall belongs. He is clearly a wing-back, or a defensive wing forward. Well i hope Big Joe can sort out all these problems! footballman22 (Galway) - Posts: 134 - 01/11/2009 18:56:55 472393 Link 0 |
