Never saw him play but Tony Reddan of Tipperary is a name my father revered, Ollie Walsh of Kilkenny would be another strong candidate. Remember the goalkeepers of that era did not get the protection the modern keepers get. In the modern era I would probably go for Brendan Cummins.

Yes, Tony Reddan of Tipperary is the best of all time as far as I'm concerned and I saw him play back in the 1950s. Absolutely brilliant and tough in the days when the forwards could charge the goalie. You charged Tony Reddan at your peril. He's still alive TG.

Hurling: Cummins/Fitzhenry i actually can't pick one.
Football: For some reason the only fella that springs to mind is that Roscommon keeper that I saw score a penalty. Football keepers rarely stand out.

ogorman & lowerormond delighted to hear ye talk about Tony Reddan and the fact that he is still alive. I was reared on yarns about the Cork/Tipp rivalry of the 50's and my late parents always maintained that Tony Reddan was the greatest keeper ever. The first poem I ever learned was after the 52 Munster Final when I was 4 or 5, My Ma thought it to me, Time has dimmed my memory and I'm not certain of the name of the Tipp player but I think it went like this. Mick Ryan of Tipperary, the great hurling star. Would make sure Christy Ring put no ball o'er the bar, But try as he may, his team didn't win. Cos the whole 15 Tipp men couldn't beat Christy Ring.

My own personal favourites, and this is the heart ruling the head, Martin Furlong and Damien Martin but in my opinion the best ever, HURLING\ BRENDAN CUMMINS TIPP AND IN FOOTBALL BILLY MORGAN, CORK.

I never saw Tony Reddan, a Galway man who starred for Tipperary, but he did make team of the century.

I saw some greats however. Ollie Walsh of Kilkenny, Noel Keith of Down, Jim Corr of Antrim, Fitzhenry of Wexford, Damian Martin of Offaly, and Ger Cunningham of Cork.

I also saw some very good keepers, Cummings of Tipp, Donal Og of Cork, Quaid of limerick, McGarry of Kilkenny, and Davy Fitz.

However the BEST I ever saw was Noel Skehan. Unbelievable.

And I did goals myself for years.

On the subject of great Goalkeepers...

Given that our Dublin friends (players & supporters alike) get so much abuse on here, it is worth noting the extraordinarily high standard of Dublin's net minders over the last 35 years or so (which is all I can comment on)

In Paddy Cullen, John O'Leary and Stephen Cluxton, they have produced 3 goalkeepers who would be ranked with and probably ahead of the best from any county over that or any period, and as far as I can recall (and I'm open to correction as always) these 3, along with 1 other (by the name of Byrne for a couple of years only) have represented the county in that position in championship football for that entire time. Again an outstanding achievement by any standards.

There is no doubt that the Dubs have had deficiencies in other department that has prevented them wining more AIs but why so strong in the goalkeeping department.

Football, seen a fair few but the two Dubs O'Leary and Cluxton, and McGreevy of Antrim were as good as anyone else.

I don't know much about football and hurling back years ago so I could not say the greatest ever. But in the last ten years I would have to say John Devine and Diarmuid Murphy are excellent Goalkeepers. Since 2003 they have 7 All Ireland Championships between them.
