Dublin's training programme

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Redhand. Dublin are one of, if not the, fittest team in the country. This is generally acknowledged by the "experts". Have you ever seen them die-off in championship games because of lack of fitness??? I haven't. Dublin have three problems, Dublin club politics, lack of ability in certain quarters and poor mental preparation for big games. Fitness is not a problem. Pity you had to throw in the pub brawl remark. I would have respected your comments more had you kept your mouth shut after your original post. Still 3 AIs in 125 years is pretty pathetic though.

Joxer, had you read the response to my posts so will see that Dublin supporters didnt appreciate my attempt of starting a new debate. Therefore what harm have i did by mentioning a pub brawl if they insult my county? I feel that 3 All Irelands within 125 years isn't bad for Tyrone and they have all come within the past 6 years, Tyrone havent been seen as a big county until about 10 years ago.

Oh come on PJ, your posts are sounding ridiculous now that you have to point out stuff like that. I said about 10 years ago. In the last this decade Tyrone and Kerry have been the dominant forces and have been a huge level above the rest.

3 All Irelands in 125 years = 'Dominant Force'= Hilarious.

PJ - go out and purchase a pair of reading glasses because you have constantly embarrased yourself through your replies. I clearly stated Tyrone and Kerry have been the dominant forces in the last decade!! Catch a grip of yourself as Dublin are slowly trickling down the gutter.

Seany16: "year in year out dublin teams tend to be as fit if not fitter than most of their opposition...they do train very hard for long sections of the year with club and county so its hard not to be fit...what we lack is top class decisive, technical ability, a large amount of confidence on the biggest stage and maybe a run or two of the ball in some memorable close matches...no small fix required.do the ground work and lay the foundations for a new breed of dublin footballer..."

Most sensible post by a Dub... ever.

Dublin have always struck me as one of, (if not the... ), fittest teams in the country. With the access to facilities in the capital they would have to be doing something monumentally stupid to be messing up the physical side of training. Having said that Kerry's recent training programme does sound very focused, and sensible too - short bursts of speed, lay the ball off, etc. asides from natual talent it would explain why Kerry are so dangerous breaking from the wide areas.

If I was a Dub I'd be less worried about the physical aspect of training and more about the convoluted zonal defending system that Gilroy seems to be obsessed with. That's the main reason Kerry tore ye apart this year. It was almost comical watching Dublin backs picking a spot and extending both arms to signify they were now in control of the left wing or something, meanwhile the O'Sullivans would just zip past, "Yerra, see ya later boy".

I hear he now has an american football coach in explaining how to properly implement the system. Sometime next Summer people will realise just how much of his arm Gilroy has been chancing.

Ok lads just so we can move on, As a Dub I'll say it now that for the last decade Kerry and Tyrone have been the dominant forces in Gaelic football, No argument.... Dublin would be lucky to be considered in the top 4 through this period and the only people to blame are ourselves. Do Tyrone and Kerry breed better players than us ????............I don't believe they do but the development and team selection processes are clearly more advanced than ours, We seem to be still of the opinion that muscle bound athletes are going to take us to the promised land, Well they havent in nearly 15 years and they won't for another 15 unless we change things. From a development prospective It doesn't take a genius to relate the fact that we haven't won a minor title since 1984 to the fact our seniors are so inept now, In 1984 a bunch of 17 year olds won an all Ireland, By 1995 some of those 17 year olds were in their mid to late 20s and had contested 3 All Ireland Finals and won one of them and were consistantly considered to be one of the top 3 teams in Ireland through that period (facts don't lie). From a selection prospective have a look at another thread on this same forum and ask yourself how many of the names of possible newcomers to the team been thrown around by people are from clubs who are not in the top 2 divisions in Dublin? Would it be fair to agree with the odd comment from our country cousins that we think like soccer people in Dublin?? ie "if you don't play in the premiership you ain't good enough to be an international" in Dublin its a case if you don't play in Div 1 or 2 you ain't good enough, there will obviously be very rare exceptions. but the attitude remains that 50 odd clubs in Dublin don't have players good enough for selection or consideration??. The upcoming trial games are a joke as the current bunch of failures aren't even required to attend, so Giller will see a few he likes, bring them in with the current failures who will clearly close ranks and make it very difficult for any unknown to come through (I witnessed this happening in early 2009 by the way), it should be a complete clean sweep or else don't be wasting peoples time, if the current failures are good enough they will stand out anyway, the past is gone and so should all reputations be

I agree with Blue Jay one hundred percent. I doubt very much that the current starting 15 are the finest footballers from Dublins 50 odd clubs. I'm sure there has been a few glaring omissions from the squad over the years with a whereas an embedded clique are now secure in the knowledge they are beyond being dropped. Hope you's get it together this year.
