Who's the best dual player?

What about the Rooney brothers from Clonaslee Declan, Mark and Darren all played Senior football and Hurling for Laois. Can any family match that. ?

Just on Stephen lucey, for a couple of years he played U21 for Croom and Limerick in football and hurling, senior for Croom and Limerick in both codes and for both UCD Gaa teams, whilst in college to become a doctor. That's 10 teams... and ive probably forgotten a couple

CJ McGourty was playing for about 16 teams.

Name them?

St Gall's minor, U 21 and senior, in two codes, and their 2nd and 3rd football teams. County minor and U21 in two codes is another 4. School team in two codes, and college team in two codes.

In Carlow we had Johnny Nevin and Paddy Quirke. In Cork O'Hailpin, Teddy McCarthy and Jimmy Barry Murphy. What about Denis Walshe, the current hurling manager, a great dual player.
In Wicklow Leighton Glynn. In Wexford, Mattie Forde. In Tipp Declan Browne. And that's only a few.

My pick would be O'hAilpin. Great all round athlete, could play him anywhere in both codes.

For a small county Laois has had a few over the years.....

Mark,Darren and Declan rooney...

Tommy fitzgerald, current Leinster hurler played in Club all-ireland football final in 2005

John O loughlin plays football for Laois u21 and senior,UCD and Leinster
Plays Hurling for Laois u21 ans senior and UCD

Cahir Healy from Portlaoise

Theres more aswell...

Johnny Nevin of Carlow was excellent at both as was George o connor.

Mattie ford is also a good hurler.Red Barry and Ciaran Lyng of Wexford also

The best at the moment has to be alan Keairns of galway or Lucey of Limerick

Past masters were Jimmy Barry,Teddy McCarthy, and sean Og for cork

Greg Blaney of don and big Geff of derry was some full forward esp in Hurling.

I know the original poster clarified that it was 'best dual player playing now' . That hasn't stopped posters from naming all and sundry no matter the era they played in. And most of those named are/were really fine dual players, with Cork having particularly good ones: JBM, Sean Og, Teddy Mac, Denis Walsh, Cadogan right now, Brian Murphy, Denis Walsh, and even the Rock. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. However, I'm amazed that no-one has mentioned the legendary Ray Cummins. All-star in both on the very first ever All-Stars in 1971 (3 hurling and 2 football in total), and named on the Millenium hurling team. Cummins has a unique record as regards Munster medals, between 1969 and 1979, he won a senior medal every year, be it in football or hurling and then he added another 2 hurling ones in '82 and '83. That's 13 senior Munster medals. God, I'd love in the present era if Limk could win one in either football or hurling! An interesting thing about the 1973 Cork winning football team is that 4 of them were dual players: Cummins, Barry-Murphy, Brian Murphy and Denis Coughlan and each won All-Stars as well as All-Ireland medals in each code, except Coughlan who never received a football All-Star. Some talent. 4 dual players on an All-Ireland wiining side. Times HAVE changed. It'd never happen now.

Shoulderghost... i know that Ray Cummins was a good footballer and a better hurler and that he was on the millennium team, but surely, (and i saw Cummins playing,) that was the biggest blunder of that team and that Nicky Rackard should have been in there instead of Cummins. I talked to a lot of people who were flabbergasted at that omission! I am too young to have remembered Rackard playing and yes Cummins was good, but...

Carlowman, I was flabbergasted myself at that decision. I used his inclusion on the Mil team to point out that the man indeed had class, in both football n hurling. At no stage have I ever said that I'd rate Cummins above Rackard (only based on what I've heard. Way too young to have seen him).

Incidentally, and this thread is about dual players, apparently Nicky Rackard played football, at mid-field for Leinster, ever before he hurled for the province. Eamonn Cregan played Railway Cup football for Munster, before he played Railway Cup hurling. Indeed it may have been before he had ever even hurled for Limk. He was about 18 at the time.
