Bad Draw but stories from French camp give us some hope.
If we qualify after this with the second leg away and all it will be the greatest victory any manager has ever produced in this country at any sport.

France are not as good as Italy. If we raise the roof off Croker in the first leg anything could happen. Was at the game in the Stade de France in 2005(?) and that was like a home game too. French soccer supporters are notoriously fickle and they arent getting behind this team at the minute so we have every chance over there if its the same story!

Dunno score wise but we ain't going through
I know France are nowhere near where they were 10 years ago but they still have too much forward power

donno what the scores are gonna be but france have way too many attacking options!!ribery, henry, benzema are all world class!!i hate to bring it up again but we seriously need stephen ireland and andy reid just to compete, never mind beat france..plus the fact that kilbane is a truly awful defender and i think the french will seriously expose him!!

all in all if we get out of croke park with a 0 - 0 draw id give us a chance!!but if we have to chase the game in paris we're finished!

I dont know why we have people talking about the crowd influencing the game. The reality is that we are talking about professionals who play in front of large crowds every week. Henry for example plays in the nou camp and benzema plays in the bearnabou. Crowds and noise dont phase players like that. If Ireland want to qualify they have to close france down in the home game and make sure we do not concede an away goal. Then we can maybe nick a score draw over there and that will be enough.

I dont buy into all this pessimism atall! And here is why. France for me is the ideal draw. Right now, they are rubbish. Their manager is a joke. Their talismatic leader is having a nightmare season. There is no Zidane. There is no Viera of 98. There isnt even a Makelele. Their man man is Ribery and he is over rated. Quality, yes, Zidane...no! More Arjen Robben than Zinadine!
They have a dodgy keeper, they cant defend set pieces. Ask the Bulgarians about Irish set peices Their defence is shaky. The parisian Crowd will turn quicker than a runny egg on them. Remember France Romania??!!
And, and this is a major plus. Say we had drawn Russia....we would be lucky to get 1000 fans going over. So we would be going over to a freezing, completely hostile environment to face Arshavin and co. As it is, we could have as many as 10,000 fans in the stadium that night and the place will be buzzing.
So long as the tie is still alive (which it will be) going to Paris, then we have a HUGE shout.

ps...on a side note, given his form in recent days and the monumental game we have coming up, Trap really needs to swallow his pride and get Andy back. For the sake of the team! Imagien the 2 reids in the centre. Different team completely.

Not saying we can't win though, don't think this was the worst draw we could have gotten either, id say Portugal would have been harder. I reckon we have a 40-60 chance of making the world cup.

Maybe Trappatoni should have tried a little bit harder in the group stages to actually win a few games.

i dunno why everyones so worried about france. they are useless. have been for a long time. dunno how they got to the last world cup final. they didnt deserve to get there. the worst draw we could have got was russia but luckily we avoided them. they would have destroyed us. france and portugal are as bad as each other. completely over-rated. portugal are a bunch of primadonna ronaldos like nani and queresma. none of the have a footballing brian apart from simao. 10 men behind the ball and they are beat. unfortuanately we didnt get them or greece. the only worry is ribery, henry or benzema could make something happen out of nothing but we should beat them. i hope they dont play gourcuff. he's technically a brilliant footballer. could completely dictate the game if he's on form and allowed time on the ball. could easily split our weak defence open with a few killer passes. he's the current player of the year in france. looking at their squad he could be their biggest threat

So this home and way policy that has always been the cornerstone of soccer is all a big cod? Of course it makes a difference.
