I'm in favour. Two provinces, Munster and Connacht, are by and large always won by just two counties. Ulster, and to a lesser extent Leinster, are far more competitive. The back door system lessens the advantage that the strong counties in Connacht and Munster currently have.

What a load of tosh.

Munster and Connacht are as competitive, if not more, than Ulster, the only difference being Ulster having more teams than the other two. Which makes Ulster worse in my eyes. You say only two counties win Connacht and Munster - name a county other than these two counties, Tyrone and Armagh, that have won Ulster in the last ten years? Answer - NOBODY. So while Kerry, Cork and Tyrone, Armagh dominate their provinces, at least Sligo put up a challenge to Galway and Mayo in the recent past. As for Leinster, yes Dublin have won the last 5 in a row, but many other counties have won it in the last 10 years, ie Meath, Kildare, Laois.

Basically it all has to do with the number of teams in each province. The more teams in a province the more likelihood you have of having different teams winning it each year. It's to Dublin's credit that they have been so consistent in Leinster the last 5 years. The provincial system should be scrapped and be drawn up into 4 groups of 8 teams each.

Very weak argument there.Apart from Clare in 92 you have to go right back to 1935 for a winner other than Kerry or Cork. It's the only province like that.Yeah you're right it must be the numbers.

I like it the way it is to be honest only thing i would change is how to give provincil winners a second bite how not sure or even group stages as counties will get more than 2 games .

Bring back the old championship. But it will never happen as the GAA would loose out on aload of money from enternce fees as there would be alot less matches.Money is all the GAA care about.they dont care about the likes of wicklow who get a good run in the championship from the qualifiers

What about Limerick's challenge to Cork this year at the Munster final, Cork just barely beat them by 1 point-Limerick played great and with Micky Neds tactics put a stop to Corks attacking centre backs

I agree. Let the provincial champs have home advantage or second go.

Not just an Irish solution. It's used elsewhere too and called double-elimination.

I've come to the conclusion that no matter what is said, triona is forever gonna be convinced that Munster is competitive. If nothing else, the qualifiers have provided counties who would traditionally have seen their championship end after one game an opportunity for another day in the sun and brings the Championship to places that may have seen little action in the past. Kerry playing Antrim in Tullamore, surely that's a good thing? I'd be pretty chuffed if i lived in Tullamore and had the opportunity to watch that game. The back door does give an advantage to the stronger counties, but also enhances the Championship for the weaker counties. I saw Meath play Limerick in Portlaoise this year and whilst it wasn't the best Football, it was still an entertaining match and a decent day out for those that went along. We all love the GAA and we all love it when the Championship comes round in May. If the backdoor does nothing else, at least it extends the season for those who ordinarily have just one meaningful game a summer.

You're trying to put words in my mouth now.

I'm not the one putting down Munster and Connacht, and I'm not saying Munster is competitive. I'm quite simply saying that if there were more than 6 counties in Munster that there is more of a chance of the extra counties doing well and possibly winning every so often. I just don't buy this argument that Ulster is the most competitive province. Certainly not through history, and definitely not in the last 10 years, when they've had the same number of different winners as the Munster Championship have had.

Lazy journalism and an inability for people to make their own minds up would lead people to think that Ulster is the most competitive. In my mind, the rankings for most competitive province in the last ten years are as follows:

1. Leinster
2. Connacht
3. Munster/Ulster.

How about a side door? Or even a half door.

---- Or even a patio door, and in the garden we could have a BBQ all for the weaker counties.

Realest, just remember that if there was straight knockout Cork wouldn't be making it out of Munster at all.

With the back door system in place, Kerry don't really start training until after the Munster championship and plod along until then!

This year Cork's intensive training was too much for our plodding in June but in a straight knock out don't worry we would be up to scratch a lot earlier in the year
