Just wondering what people reckon the standard of irish music is like today.Thank god we still have some fine acts around including u2,the Blizzards,Damien Dempsey and of course the one and only Aslan.(finglas people have to like them, its in our constitution)but is just me or is there some terrible acts around, including the Script,Bell X1,Damien Rice to name just a few.

Irish music is dominated as always by some great trad musicians.

As for singer song writers, my mate is the best of them, but he lives in Castlewellan now so I rarely see him.

U2 I know nothing about, musically. I know Bono is a super prat.

beer baron i just find rice so fecking depressing,i did think the song he did with lisa hannigan was good tho, unplayed piano.
cavanmuja-i think the later stuff from u2 has to listened to a lot more before it grows on you but having said that it doesnt come near their early stuff.
i have tried a lot of torrents for damos stuff but can never find one with any stuff from him.did anyone here the proclaimers version of one of his songs, cant remember the name of it

Anyone with an interest in contemporary irish rock music should go to the ''HardWorking Class Heroes'' festival in Dublin this weekend. All the little known ''underground'' bands in Ireland are playing in various venues around Dublin. I think you'll be surprised with the quality of music. Quality acts like Fionn Regan, SuperExtraBonusParty, HamSandwich etc.

And also The Coronas and Blizzards are a pile of s***.

The above is a rock band, not really my cup of tea but superior to say U2.

U2 are the most overated collection of noise makers ( not musicians ) i have ever heard. 3 or 4 decent albums back when Old Dog was a puppy. Not good now and havent been for a generation!

I've never heard the coronas but the blizzards are brutal - your man should have stuck to the rugby. Not a great fan of the likes of Damien Dempsey and Aslan either. Damien Rice is alright but i can understand why people don't like him. Bell XI arent the worst but its easy to get sick of them. Fionn Regan is head and shoulders above everybody else that I've heard.
