The Glensman, there's a whole street in Co monaghan (including a garda station) that pay rent to nobility in England. I also know of a river in Cork where the landlord in England has put up fees for fishing on 'his' stretch. Tom1916 (Armagh) - Posts: 2001 - 10/10/2009 20:51:22 450819 Link 0 |
British money didn't pay for Peter Canavan or Mickey Harte or Cormac McAnallen or any other footballer brought up on the game he loves by an Irish community in a statelet occupied by britain. northernpower (Tyrone) - Posts: 40 - 10/10/2009 20:56:11 450820 Link 0 |
Enough of this rubbish. The bottom line is that the reason why Ulster counties have been so successful in recent times is because they are better than the rest of us. ENOUGH SAID. REDROM (Offaly) - Posts: 208 - 10/10/2009 21:25:56 450829 Link 0 |

I have not read the other threads on this topic yet but i am totally disgusted about these comments!! who does this guy think he his! let me tell you this when Mickey Harte had these players at minor level im sure there was very little funding from north or south and same again at under 21 level when he won both under 18 and 21 all-ireland medals so money had nothing to do with it! i no from my own clubs county players that they use r club facilities for mosts of there training! so when it comes to football ability it has nothing to do with government funding. total disgrace this ex player has come out with these comment Skyblue (Tyrone) - Posts: 193 - 10/10/2009 22:42:55 450860 Link 0 |
British cash has helped the Northern teams. They have far better PE in their schools and better facilities. They have SINI in UUJ as well. I think Curran is overplaying it but it could well be a factor. None of the counties in the Republic are as organised at underage intercounty at U16 and minor in terms of player development(trust me I've seen the manuals) and it helps they are working in a framework where sport takes a higher precedence in schools. I'm a huge fan of Tyrone (and to a lesser extent Armagh) by the way. roundball (Tipperary) - Posts: 2514 - 10/10/2009 23:16:21 450890 Link 0 |
Does London get funding from britain,free state, connacht(for football purposes),ulster(for hurling) and likewise new york?? bumpernut (Antrim) - Posts: 1852 - 10/10/2009 23:56:48 450913 Link 0 |
There is no doubt that there are those who want Ulster, especially 6 county teams, to be excluded from the GAA. Despite historical facts and evidence they don't view the North as Irish or Northerners as part of the Irish nation and SAM going over the border is their ultimate nightmare. In another context this would be called fascism and racism but in reality this divisiveness is pushed, lauded and encouraged by many high profile Southern GAA figures, press and media pundits. It is no wonder we get stuff like this when others pave the way for it. It is time that Croke Park and the Ulster Council made a statement condemning the nasty bitter Southern bigotry that is starting to divide the Association. To be honest, I don't care where or how much money the northern counties have got to help their clubs. The way I see it is that these Northern clubs had to fight a way more than any of the southern clubs had to fight since the 1920s to survive. They are a credit to Ireland for keeping up, integrating and furthering the GAA in the north and I for one, would not begrudge them a penny/cent. kerrykerry (Kerry) - Posts: 1779 - 11/10/2009 00:38:15 450930 Link 0 |
this is a foolish thread....every county has football pitches dont they????....thats all you need when your a 7 year old starting to play......as for better facilities in uuj and queens to develop their skills further, whats stopping southern players going to college there???...NOTHING....alot of northern players go to dublin colleges anyway!!!!!.......i would recommend kerry players to go to uuj though.......help stop them from running out of steam when they meet ulster teams!!!!!!!.....working around the farm does not get you fit lads!!!!!! .tribute (Cavan) - Posts: 360 - 11/10/2009 00:57:30 450944 Link 0 |

Lads get a grip. Money is money wherever it comes from & if the Six Counties get a bit extra then good luck to them. Games still have to be won on the field - money or no money. Kerry proved themselves in this regard & don't doubt for a minute that they were short a bob or two. Tyrone & Aemagh (and also Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Derry, Down and Fermanagh - sorrry Partique) have been great ambassadors for Gaelic Football over the past fifteen years. dingle1 (Clare) - Posts: 805 - 11/10/2009 04:36:14 450963 Link 0 |
So would I be correct in pointing out, by Shane Currans logic, both London and New York should be close to winning both the league and Championship in the next year or so with the money they'll received from both the UK and US Governments and of course from Croke Park!! Dont think so boys!! kerrystar (Kerry) - Posts: 20 - 11/10/2009 10:34:07 450982 Link 0 |

But most of them would go to galway sligo or jordnstown.. fitzpatrick from down was with ucd last year bit i heard he is in jordanstown now... Why shouldn't we take the money we pay taxes. Call it rent. saffron21 (Antrim) - Posts: 138 - 11/10/2009 11:09:04 450995 Link 0 |
Why should Shane Curran's comments about British Gov's funding for GAA clubs be considered controversial? Sure everybody knows he is only stating the truth. That's not Tyrone's or Armagh's fault. It is just their good fortune (for once !) to be still part of the United Kingdom. The other side of the coin shows that they have paid dearly over the generations for their good fortune ! michael (Cork) - Posts: 381 - 11/10/2009 11:11:09 450998 Link 0 |

Why did the giving of this 'money' only work in Tyrone and Armagh? Surely Antrim, Fermanagh, Derry and Down were getting the same treatment? Most of these counties have been pretty low in recent times. BIG SACKS (Tyrone) - Posts: 1681 - 11/10/2009 11:34:50 451016 Link 0 |
