Most southerners would strongly oppose the re unification for obvious reasons.....

the thing that annoys me is that I have never before heard anyone in the 26 counties I have ever met, and I have met alot from living and working in different parts through out the country, none have ever said they would not like a United and Independant Ireland.

In fact alot of people be up your hole for news and stories and are all big Republicians/Nationalists, but on H.S. some (not all) be full of resentment towards the occupied 6 counties and all pro-brit.

Any one remember what the men and women of 1916 set out to achieve, when the country was divided it went to civil war. Collins' said it was a stepping stone to the ultimate freedom! So every thing these men done, as well as those previous and after, was all in vain because the brits already had plans to establish a seperate state in the north of the country before the outbreak of WW1!

Maybe Dev was right to reject the treaty becaue those in the "south" have changed their mind and are happy with waht they have, did Dev see this coming??

A resounding YES for me.

can anyone think of a good reason why we WOULD want it back?

You have got this wrong. My favourite chant is "give us back the 26".

I would be happy that way.

LOL patrique, I like that.

I will vote YES because i have learned that voting no on referendums is not accepted so they make you do it again and again.

As we can see on HS the past 80 years have created a strong partitionist mentality in the 26 counties. Irish citizens in the North were sold out in 1921 and for many in the South Northern Catholics can go to hell for all they are concerned, we have learnt that especially over the past 40 years. There will be a united country one day but maybe not for a few generations, the birthrate in the North will ensure that this topic keeps coming back and back until a referendum is held. There are a lot of ignorant people about who talk about the North as if was planted on to the top of the 26 counties from Mars one dark night and who talk of people there as if they are not Irish, these fools should go and learn about their country's history. Many Northern Catholics in Belfast have their roots in the West of Ireland whose forefathers came North during the British Industrial Revolution of the mid 19th century and many who sought refuge from the Famine. My own grandmother's people were from Galway AND there are there people still saying and denying that I am NOT Irish? Many Derry City people come originally from the Donegal hinterland likewise in Armagh, Down, Monagham, Cavan there many many people who have relatives on both sides of the border. Those who bury their heads or are just plain ignorant show their lack of education. To say that the North is NOT part of Ireland is like denying that your sore arm/leg/head is NOT part of your body because it is sore. Ulster was ALWAYS the MOST rebellious and Irish part of the island, that's why the English subdued it and tried to kill the native culture with the Plantations of the 16th and 17th centuries. It didn't work then and the revisionists on HS will not do it now.

Ulsterman

Some good points but I can seriously see a situation whereby Nationalists in the north will be in the majority up there, but then ROI says NO to a united Ireland in
a vote (not me personally I would be in favour)

Then what would happen? This island would be in a right mess!!

sorry ulsterman but a lot of lads from the north live here and when all the refugees came down here when the troubles started they were well looked after , history has dealt us a bad hand and hopefully if the hatred does ever leave and we move on a lot more then we can and should have a united ireland and it will make ireland a much bigger and stronger country but it will take years and years

I'll accept that hipster it's fair comment. It would be very disingenuous of me to deny that many Southern people DID indeed get involved in the conflict over the past 40 years in various ways that you have described.

meath boy if the south were given a vote to reunite with the 6 oppressed irish countys it would win 90-10 at worst. anyone i ask (who couldnt care in the least) still always say they would love to see a united country. and anyway i doubt we would get a vote. we shouldnt. we have no right to stop them rejoining. its the 6 county country as much as ours

some people down south are greedy sell-outs. care only about themselves and their own freedom. as long as they are happy nothing else matters

Ulsterman, I think you might also find that in Northern Ireland.

I don't thin k Britain will wait that long. They will force us into a united Ireland before that, whether people want one or not.

Well the entire peace plan in the north was based on that premise according to our Deputy First Minister.
