Did he get hurler of the year for Carlow SHC this year or just for Erins Own. Anyway well done, he is also quite a footballer.

A lot of good teams registered:
1. Frank Foley
2. Karl Lawler
3. Tom Doyle
4. Gary Doyle
5. Ed Coady
6. Shane Kavanagh
7. Jcko Rogers
8. Damien Roberts
9. James Hickey
10. Brian Doyle
11. Edward Byrne
12. Craig Doyle
13. Denis Murphy
14. Christy Coady
15. Willie Hickey.

That is the team that i think should be out there for teh league and game against Laois. A few otheres from Erins Own and Dunbar from Carlow and Kelly as a half back perhaps instead of Coady.

Don't think I would have Beanie where he is peter doyle would deserve it more. Don't think I would have Paudie on it.

Carlow Kid I think you are very close to the mark. a nice blend of youth and experience. Id have the duke in corner back instead of young Kelly he gives a bit of cuteness to a very young line. Gary kelly is a fine young hurler but give him a year or two. Half back line interesting but worth a shot. Midfield has a seasoned look about it but would they have the legs. I might have to have big mark Brennan in there for his fitness and physique. Id have Dereck Byrne wing forward instead of Willie Hickey. Id have styler as an impact sub for a goal if needed and Willie hickey at 14. Some real quality out there guys and we will need it all next year. we have a year to look forward to though so lets row in behind the team and give them the support they deserve.

My Carlow team for the 2010 season

1. David Miley
2. Andrew Gaule
3. Shane Kavanagh
4. Alan Corcoran/ Eoin Nolan (not a very big full back line???)
5. Edward Cody
6. John Rogers
7. Peter Doyle
8. Ruairi Dunbar
9. Damien Roberts
10. Mark Brennan
11. Eddie Byrne
12:Craig Doyle
13. Denis Murphy
14. Robbie Foley
15. Paudi Keohe

Some others that there's only a toss of a coin for

Richard cody and Richard Kelly as half backs, Brian Doyle and james Hickey at midfield, Derek Byrne and John Cody up front

I think that this year Kevin Ryan will be picking his team to suit his opponents though so it is very difficult to predict what a settled team will look like. I imagine there will be massive positional and personnel changes for each match depending on who we're playing.

Hurler of the year seems to be down to 4 main contenders, Hickey and Rogers seem to be dominating the running with Peter Doyle and Derek Byrne following closely.

It's hard to know. What does hurler of the year stand for or symbolise, a leader of the team, someone with great skill, somone who was solid and consistant all year, someone who had 2 or 3 brilliant games and was quite in others, someone who carried his team all year and dragged them through tough matches almost single handed and stood up when the time was needed????

Depending on what way you look at hurler of the year you could probably give it to any one of the above players. In my opinion the hurler of the year should go to the one player who stood out among all others and pulled his team through the tough matches with heart, pride, skill and shear determination because thats what the GAA is.. PASSION

Rangers coasted to the final and even though Hickey and Byrne had very good years they were never really tested and never had to drag their team through tough matches on their own, although Hickey did put in some big hours for carlow this year in important matches. As for Rogers and Doyle, well i think these 2 lads really made the difference for EO this year. Without them EO would difinitely be going another year without even reaching a semi final. Doyle was consistancy all through. Solid gritty, tough and stylish and well deserving of EO player of the year but my hurler of the year for 09 is John Rogers.

I recall some great performances from this young man this year for club and county. Solid all through the Christy ring with huge performances against Kildare and Down and what about his man of the match performance in Kerry, his fielding a joy to watch down there. With EO this year he was the differnce between them winning and losing those tight early games, he was magnificent early on against Carlow town and NB and in the KK league by all accounts,v good game in the semi and although he was quiet in the final his catch in the first half over Eddie Byrne will be rembered for years by all that saw it. His determination, hard hits and magnificent fielding are contantly a joy to behold from the banks. I think he brings the whole mix of skill and passion to the game and he showed it consistently this year.

I must admit, it's very tight between him and James and even though the honour usually goes to the winners it would also be as apt to give it to an EO man on the 75th anniversary of their club as it would to give it to a member of the champions. Its down to Hickey and Rogers for me but my nod goes to Jacko

Ashbreaker i would agree with all your points. I think he had a tougher year than James and did probably more heavy lifting than James out of pure necessity. Also James did not stand out on final day when really required. However if you made that analasys you would probably have given hurler of the year to eithir Roberts or Tom Doyle. For my mind Roberts was outstanding in all games that i saw and i saw most. He was head and shoulders the best hurler in our game against Myshall and also in the semi final againt Btown. He had mosre work to do than most as his team were always under pressure. A fantastic years hurling from him.
I saw Doyle in a couple of the games that St. Mullins played and he was also outstanding. Had a brilliant game against us even though his team was well beat. Never shirked his duties and hurled anybody that came his way.

Unfortunatly it dosent always go to the most deserving and if i was a betting man i would put my money on James getting it. Could be wrong though and i certainly wouldnt begrudge James his day. he has been fantastic for our club over the past couple of years and has given all in both club and county colours. remember he has played Senior Football for both club and county aswell as Senior Hurling for both aswell. Only Eoin Nolan that i can think of in the past couple of years can make that claim and he only stuck with the pace for one year with the Senior Footballers at county. It takes a huge commitment from a guy to do what James has done. he has also stopped getting involved as much and contributes more to the team now than in the past. Anyway i will get off the soapbox now. Best of luck to whoever wins it.

All, Im new to this post. i always viewed it but never got involved. I was reading all your points & often get a smile from some & some maden me. Now just to clear up a bit about me, just so people cant say im a hurler on the ditch. i have played county Hrling & Football i played with my county for 15 years & it was always a honour to wear the red yellow & green. i am retired now but spend my time week in week out going around the county to matches. I read some of these teams & some of these posts & i wonder to myself.... why do we slate players who repersent the county. why do we knock players who go in with the county train hard do there best??? I think these guys deserve great credit & i wish all carlow teams next year the best of luck. during my career i have seen super teams & by there were super teams around, the great eire og team, the great myshall team, great Rathvilly Teams & great st mullins teams who always gave us great enjoyment & pleasure both within the county & Leinster. Now i have seen this decade another great eire og team emerge a Pal Team that always kept coming back & a Rathvilly team who were always there or there abouts. In Hurling i have seen a great Rangers team emerge with Myshall - St Mullins & Naobh Brid never far behind. This year i seen Bagnelstown reach the final & it is great to see them there but will they be back i hope so. i remember st mullins & Pal suffering loads of heart break but they kept coming back i believe Rangers lost 3 & 2 semis before they won one. its a long road with a lot of twists & turns & no one has the god giving right to win anything thats sport a long hard road just when you think you have built a team to compete always something will go wrong. i hope Bagnelstown do come back but as i said its a long road & next year we shall see. I wish all the teams the best next year & i hope they all progress & to the teams that repersent carlow this year in leinster Best of Luck.

Ashbreaker,

Fair comments. I was in Nolan Park the day Rangers won the Kilkenny league & Hickey was outstanding i went down to support them in semi final & final. he scored a line ball to win the semi & was Man of the Match in the Final, he was Brill with carlow & Brill with Rangers. I for one & a lot of others thinks he def deserves this one. They are the champions they are KK league Champions, they won some competition in Westmeath will John Hayden win Footballer i think not it will go to a Rathvilly man they are Champions. If Eirns eoin are good enough they will come back & win it next year like Rangers done after the defeat last year & then they should have there hurler of the year.

Carlowgael - welcome to the site -always good to have someone with well thought out and constructive thoughts aboard! I agree there have been great club teams in carlow over the years and I have always felt that even in carlow it is very difficult for a team to win a championship. People think that even though there are only 7 senior hurling clubs in carlow that its somehow an 'easier' championship - we just havent had that much luck in leinster club hurling compared to football. Hopefully Rangers mite change that this year with a good run - i think they are very focused and have the ability to do well.
