465919 The standard in Louth must be really bad after the hiding Mattock Rangers got !! I thought they would be better than that !!

The standard isn't really bad in Louth its abysmal!!! But when you have a LCB that couldn't care less then it's no surprise.

However, I wouldn't be so hard on Mattock. They are from a small population (like most clubs) and in the last 6 years they have reach a Leinster Semi-Final and Final. Also look at some of the counties that have gone far in recent years - Carlow, Wicklow and so on. When was the last time that a Tyrone or Kerry club won a club final?

Club football doesn't necessarily relate to the inter-county scene. If it did then, because of Mattocks recent successes Louth might actually have gone somewhere.

No disrespect meant towards Mattock at all just disappointed at the poor one sided game, also for the players themselves who i'm sure put in the effort all year along with the club itself, the standard doesn't auger well for the game in louth considering they are the best in it.
Maybe portlaoise are as good as they looked.

The winner won't be from Mayo anyways going by yesterday's game..
This is not anti-Mayo as I'm a Galway man just my opinion.

re. to RLF

the last time a Kerry club won the AIB football championship was only about 2 yr's ago Dr. Crokes, your right about what you said about any Tyrone club's alright, fair disapointing the way you never hear the the likes of Dromore or Airgeail Ciaran's winning anything on the intercounty club stage

The last time a Kerry club won the AIB football championship was in 1996, Laune Rangers.
Dr. Crokes got to the All Ireland final in 2007 but lost to Crossmaglen.

RLF, are there too many clubs in the Wee County ? Mattock Rangers are from quite a small village, Collon, and have achieved a lot at county level i.e. three senior titles in the last 10 years. Things are different at provincial level where they could come up against a team from Dublin with a huge pick or a team from Portlaoise, a big town with only one team in it. However this defeat puts things in perspective regarding strength of panel, where one or two good players who are not fit on the day can lead to the complete downfall of the team. It should not happen to that extent though where a team can only manage 2 points in an hour. Apart from blaming the county board for holding back the entire county, how do you explain this defeat ?

drogheda and dundalk are both bigger than portlaoise how come they're not beating Collon, the size of the catchment area doesn't seem to be the defining criteria

dHorse, from reading the Louth Board it seems that Drogheda and Dundalk have loads of teams and this makes them weak and fighting for the same players. Apparently Dundalk has something like seven teams inside the town boundaries and Drogheda had six !! Portlaoise has only one !!

Fair enough but I also mentioned Tyrone. And how many have they won compared to Dublin, Armagh and Cork clubs?

Point is that club success has little or no bearing on the inter-county scene.

must admit 7 seems a lot for one town, considering how strong soccer is. over the years the bigger towns dont tend to have a stranglehold on the provincial titles. portlaoise are probably a cut above the average at the moment ok, but in the county final arles kilcruise gave them a good run, and they probably have less of a catchment area than mattock given the circumstances in Arles. maybe it was just an off day but judging from the louth posters it seems all's not well in the county.

dHorse, all is not well in a lot of the border counties !! Portlaoise seem to be a very good team though. I know from a friend that they expected to do well last year too but failed to do so. Maybe this year !!

Drogheda and dundalk are towns with populations of just 40thousand each. Portlaoise has 15 thousand. I dont think that's a fair argument. Them two louth towns if ya put em together have more than all of laois! Be interested in knowing how many clubs are in similar sized towns like tullamore, athlone etc. Maybe 1 club in portlaoise is low by country standards?

Exactly, the club/county thing often doesn't relate. In the 90's my own club Eire Og in Carlow won 5 Leinster titles, and got to 2 All Ireland Finals...while the county side never even got to a Leinster semi final in that time. Then when the Eire Og side got a bit old, O'Hanrahans the other Carlow Town club went and won Leinster in 2000!
