Who's the best Midfield Pairing you ever saw?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

No doubt this topic has been debated before i ventured into the education system of Loyal2, Kleenex, Bananaman, Patrique and the rest, but if it is then i apologise ( my first sign of weakness ) but would love to hear everyone's views on this one. For me in my totally unbiased blinkers off opinion it would have to be Anthony Tohill and Brian McGilligan of Derry in the 90's. I personally think these two would wipe out any pairing of the present day at their leisure. Any views?

Hugo Clerkin and David Byrne.

Tough and classy.

Pale and tanned.

What a combo.

Sean O'Domhnaill & Kevin Walsh for Galway 1998 - 2001 were very good.
Teddy McCarthy and Shay Fahy for Cork.
ANd yes Tohill and McGilligan were very strong.

On a biased view, I will have to agree with Luker. Seanie Walsh and Jacko would be hard to beat. Darragh and Scanlon have been formidable for the past couple of years too though. one of them always plays well, which is the key.

The legendary Willie Joe Padden alongside T.J Kilgannon. I remember the '88 semi-final against Meath when they completely destroyed Liam Hayes and Gerry McEntee. Unfortunately for Mayo, their forwards were absolutely useless and wasted most of that hard-won possesion. Martin Carney's miss from a 13-yard free straight in front of the posts was one of the lowlights.

McGilligan/Tohill and Walsh/O shea are the only two pairings that have won all stars in the same year
Not saying that - thats an acid test but it is a benchmark.

I'm sure there are parinings that won all stars between though not in the same year which might be another way of looking at it
Sheedy/Stynes for e.g

Ulster had some great partnerships at Railway Cup level, any combination of Liam Austin, McAlarney, Eugene McKenna, Peter McGinnity.

At colleges level Queen's had Tohill and McGrane around 1993.

At county level O'Shea and Walsh would be hard to beat, and Tohill and McGilligan is certainly up there. Mick O'Connell and DJ Crowley were another good pairing.

Strange how most of "my" favourite mid-fielders were from Ulster, going right back to Jim McKeever of Derry. Maybe Ulster specialises in this position?

TKC if memory serves me right Seanie Walsh only won one all ireland as a midfielder with Jacko' he played full forward and lost to Dublin 76 & 77 against Mullins & Brogan; was moved to full back once Bomber came on th scene; Mullins was a beast of a player with a superb footballing brain, comfortable on either foot; would loved to have seen him play alongside Jacko; hard to go past Jacko but I still believe Magilligan /Tohill pairing as the most consistent midfield pairing; Magilligandid all the donkey work which allowed Tohill a greater freedom to display his skills; 2 superb athletes; however my dad cited Mick O'Connell and Jim McKeever as the 2 finest midfielders he has ever seen play the catch and kick game

Seamus O'Hanlon and Gerry Curran (early 90s- Louth). Amongst the top 2-3 pairings in the country at the time.
