90's compared to the 00's

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

If you havent already said it Patrique then it would be news to you because you know everything. Niamh dont pretend you know anything about the 90's as you were probably only getting born in one of those years. And by the way whats this nonsense some of you keep spouting about Tyrone people only seeing things from 2003 onwards? Does the same apply to say Donegal and Derry people only seeing things from 92 and 93 onwards also? Tyrone people are well aware of the 90's,95 and 96 in particular. We also remember the 80's and 86 in particular in that decade. So do us a favour and stop with the 2003 tripe.

the 90's for me, i think both hurling and football have become far more cynical, take for example Michael Donnellans point against kildare in the 98 final, would he have soloed the length of field in todays game, or would Cairan Carey have soloed up the middle of any team and through over a match winning piont aswell, its just a thought, i await the lambasting....

Its hard to compare era's lets be honest, but as time goes on, methods get better....lets be honest, who doesnt watch the gaa gold games now and cringe and some relatively basic mistakes they would have a field day on now.
I equate it to sprinting, throughout time the records have got better, its down to modernisation of techniques which ultimately means better times.
Its just my opinion but Gaelic Football has changed hugely in the last 20 years. Whether or not players are better or more skillful will never be solved and can be argued forever, thats not my place to have an opinion but to be perfectly honest the fact the players are fitter now and basically professional means that the modern game is much better- for its flaws and arguements about "systems" its still better.

Obviously the standard has gotten better but is it more entertaining than seeing new teams really emerge every year or 15 counties honestly able to compete each year? The only people to argue that the 00's are better is Tyrone people.

Im one of those Tyrone people that are indifferent to how the county do.

The 90s by a mile, there was better football, more variety and it was still cool to bring air horns to matches.

It's hard to compare the 90's and 00's. Would the players today have survived the physical element of the 90's, I doubt it. On the other hand would the 90's players have survived the speed of todays game, I doubt it again. There are some players out there who would have survived both decades no problem.
Football in the 90's was a different animal to the 00's. Football is evolving as the decades go by so it's not easy to compare.

I think the introduction of the 2nd chance/back-door ultimately killed the excitement of Gaelic Football, so the 90s was unquestionably better, no going through the motions for some teams like kerry and tyrone these days...

Did I give an opinion about which was better anywhere? I was born in the 80s actually.

And another thing Seanie Boy, I starting going to football matches regularly in 96/97 as for the years following up to that I have watched the videos a hundred times, We have every Derry match on tape from 92, I have seen the Ulster final and All Ireland with Donegal in 92, Down in 91, the 1st round between Derry and Down in 94 (probably the best game of football I have ever seen, despite us losing) You lot in 95 and 96. So don't come on here and assume I don't know what I am on about. Just because I didn't see every single match from the 90's doesn't mean I can't have an opinion.

the 1990s were the best decade for both hurling and football

the 00s has seen the standard of football drop drastically. The basic skills have been replaced by an emphasis on fitness & strength. Instead of playing football most teams now focus on stopping the other team playing and hope to get a few scores on the counter attack.

Unfortunately the 00s will be remembered for Puke Football, negative tactics, swarm defending & the introduction of diving

433925 I think the 90s saw an increase in the belief by many more counties in their ability to compete at the top level, but it also coincided with the demise and rebuilding of the Kerry team from 1986 through to 1999, with only the 1 title in 97 (which they won thanks to MAYO!!!!!!!!!).

Thanks to Mayo? Thanks to Maurice more like! As a friend of mine from Kerry reminded me on Sunday, Kerry don't now have 36 All-Irelands, they've 35 because Maurice has the other one!

Well Ulster teams did win a few All Irelands in the 90's. Don't Include Derry in that , they play an attractive style of football .

The game has moved on a lot even since the 90's and i wonder how many of those finalists would make it to a final right now?

well Bingy thats an easy one. None of them. They'd be all too old and outta shape to make a final now. Most teams would be into their late 30s and 40s. Don't be silly.
