King is a big strong mid fielder. could be great partner for dan, altho he was on panel under paddy o rourke and never cut it altho he would only be 24 r 25 so maybe deserves another go. is just a ball winner pure and simple, but is vey big and strong and will throw himself about.

He's a tall midfielder who is physically strong, could be a good compliment to big Dan.

i think where down is overlay lackin is in raw talent. there is only 2 or 3 players with genuine raw talent such as gordon clarke and coulter mccomiskey as well but if you look at kerry most of their starting 15 is made up of genuinely brilliant players.

James grant is undoubtedly a good player... But unless you want to pay his fare to fly home from England you may forget it... Lad has gone to strawberry hill teaching school in england so won't be around to even play u-21s.

Big loss for loughinisland - on top of O'Reilly going to oz

Shaun Parr should definately be in the frame. He is a class act. Also James Colgan should be given another chance under James. Mickey Walsh is easily one of the best forwards in Down at the minute and should definately be included. Ryan Mallon from the Point was also pretty impressive this year in a poor Point side and could possibly be given a chance. An injury free Adrian Mackin is lethal on his day and Brian Cole was aslo pretty impressive this year but may not be county standard. Mark Poland should also be given a chance.

There's lots of talk that players from divisions 3 and 4 are not up to county standard, if my memory serves me in the team of 91, John Kelly, Greg Blaney(Carryduff div 3) Peter Withnell (Drumaness div 3) Wee James (Tullylish div 3) before the caravan fiasco, Paul Higgins (Ballymartin div 3), Neill Collins spent most of his time in the Drumaness team before moving to Carryduff. Does this not argue for at least taking a good look outside the usual suspects in Div 1. Players generally play for their home team not everyone can be born and reared in the bridge or Kilcoo.

We cannot keep trying small league players out, as i've always stated, players like Jack Lynch, John Boyle and the likes have all been given their chance, and not proven their worth, hopefully with the new manager comes a new selection process, surely there are better players in the likes of division 1/2. We keep coming back to these players, the second chance rule has been abused, they've had more than two chances and still proved their not worth picking.

Why do so few Kilcoo players make the county panel? Is it their choice? Nial Morgan, Aidan Brannigan, Paul Devlin are worth a look. Conor Laverty is not a county player. John (Stick) McCarthy is Loughinisland' best player every season. Worth a try too. ----Peter Turley at full back?

you havent a clue what you are talking about mr controversial. John Boyle played div1 last season for warrenpoint. there are loads of examples of good county players coming from smaller clubs. Mickey linden played in div 4 for mayobridge not that long ago kilcoo were div 3 as well. Greg blaney played div 4 for ballycran, half the 91 team played div 3 football at some stage. There are a lot of quality players in div 3 in particular at the moment, mick magee played midfield for the u21s all last year from ardglass, john mcareavey from tullylish is a classy footballer, mccommisky, a fella called ging from drumgath is very good and it will be stronger next year as well with the extra div 2 teams. If you ever looked at the cork and kerry teams you would find a surprisingly high number of players from junior clubs.

why did you mention kilcoo in your post, did they have any down players when they were in div3, i dont think so! and do they have any now? maybe before they go rummaging around in the lower divisions they should have a look at the best team in the county see can they find any county standerd players there?

There are a few players from Kilcoo that should be looked at but just because you have the best team does not neccessarily mean you should have a load of county players. In Kilcoo they have a great system and understanding but they do not rely on any superstars, that is why I think they have less representation. Burren where probably the best team in Down in 1994 (except for possibly Downpatrick) yet did not have a single player in the county team.

Like others have said there are plenty of examples of exceptional players for Down that have spent a large part of there career outside division 1. Would Down have won anything without the below players? I don't think so.

N. Collins,
P. Higgins,
J. Kelly,
G. Blaney,
M. Linden,
P. Whitnell,
J. McCartan

Over the season all teams probably rely on 30 players, having 1 exceptional player will not bring success over night. Even if Benny Coulter transfered to Ballykinlar they would probably still struggle to get out of division 4 as in some matches he might never get the ball.
