players can still do it, just not as many. For most players, long range scores are not the "brief" given by the manager, it may well be just to harry and hassle, and when they have the ball, lay it off to the lads who CAN kick good scores... banner_boy (Clare) - Posts: 1285 - 15/09/2009 14:05:58 426502 Link 0 |

Rocksteady, what if a team were up by a point in the last minute of a game and the other team scores a point around the 45, its a crucial score can the ref tell 100% which side of the 45 he was on in the split second he kicked it? Niamh (Derry) - Posts: 2397 - 15/09/2009 15:27:29 426641 Link 0 |
Agree to a point. Was watching Armagh v Kerry final in 2002 - it was long range points which won it for Armagh. They were getting it tight in close to the goals - but long range points from Clarke - 2, Marsden - 2 and McEntee gave them five valuable points. That is what the current Armagh team cant produce. Even watching Crossmaglen down through the years - they won most games in low scoring affairs with long range points. Brolly (Monaghan) - Posts: 4472 - 15/09/2009 15:47:35 426674 Link 0 |

I'm not anti football. But I would admit I don't have a love for the game in its current style. I much prefer footballers to kick the ball rather than continual hand pass. And its not some pub conversation when drunk (although I said it to a west cork lad in the pub who agreed with me.) I also have more county football medals than hurling under age. And I appear to have agreement from a pro-football poster: castlemaine County: Kerry Posts: 221 425707 A very valid point. Few footballers can do it from 30 yards. Its the way the gaame has gone, the basic skill of a forward kicking from long range is gone. O Neill kicked a great point recently McMahon done like wise. Young players are now meant to do workman like jobs rather than the old game. And until the hurling final, the best GAA matches for me this year had been gaelic football matches..also Kilkenny have won a gaelic football all-ireland in more recent times than Roscommon have won a hurling all Ireland. well when you think of the amount of tems that rely on 1 or 2 lads for all the scores one really must wonder liathroidboy (Mayo) - Posts: 4921 - 15/09/2009 22:24:02 427196 Link 0 |

Isn't that what the referee is there to do, make these decisions! That's where help from the lines men can be of use, something which isn't done enough of. He will have time to consult his lines men to get their views IF he is unsure. I think its more clear cut then for example, the penalty in the hurling final. And for hurling people I mean was it over carrying the ball of a foul outside the box, it for sure wasn't a penalty but that has been done to death here! i think what we all need to ask is why doesnt the likes of noel o'leary and paul galvin have sticks in matches, now that would make entertainment. HokeyPokey (Tyrone) - Posts: 1744 - 16/09/2009 21:00:42 428235 Link 0 |

It's the same year Pudders,You really are cluthcing at straws. We won an AI-minor football in 2006 and our last provincial football crown was 2001.You see pudders there is the small matter of Galway and Mayo to be dealt with every year for us-both much Larger counties with 2/3 times the amount of clubs we have. The fact is we have a small band of dedicated people who put their heart and soul into Hurling in this county,We have won AI 'b' minor and u21 Hurling titles in recent times and Nicky Rackard,It may not be a great level to you,But it is the level we are at and I will make no apologies for it. fredrickwood (Roscommon) - Posts: 2871 - 17/09/2009 13:25:53 428776 Link 0 |
