Long range Gaelic points are a thing of the past

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A serious question but how come few footballers can shoot a point from the 45 or thereabouts in their hands. Very rarely do you see them score, usually pass inside or drop short. Is long range kicking a dying art, or did it never exist and I'm imagining it? I've been very confused the last few years over why lads don't take a shot and instead run/hand pass/kick a pass inside.

Maybe you should have been watching Mulligan yesterday.

Have you ever tried to put a ball over the bar on the run with Ryan McMennimem (help with the spelling Tyrone lads please) or Marc O Se breathing down your neck from 45m?

A very valid point. Few footballers can do it from 30 yards. Its the way the gaame has gone, the basic skill of a forward kicking from long range is gone. O Neill kicked a great point recently McMahon done like wise. Young players are now meant to do workman like jobs rather than the old game.

Thing of the past?ah yeh, sure there used to be great "drop-kicked" points back in the day...gimme a break.there are long range points kicked nowadays, but the ball is worked/carried in closer because obviously there is a far better chance of scoring from 20/30 metres than there is from 40.obviously.there are still some great points scored from distance, with some players better than others at this.

more sensible kicking from close in, the risk from far out is that you put it wide with out having a chance of putting it over or letting it drop to the fullbacks or goal keeper, losing possesion and having to win the ball and work the ball up the feild for another try, losing possesion now adays is just a cardinal sin for the inter-couny teams

That's because you probably very rarely see anyone one score. You have to watch the games to see scores being taken. Dont just dream up some rediculous thread based on what someone in the local mentioned to you after 14 pints of smithwicks.

If you cared to watch Tadgh Kennelly in the semifinal, or the entire cork team throughout the whole campaign, or Declan Sullivan, Darren Sullivan, Gooch, Justin McMahon, Tom O'Sullivan, Eoin Mulligan, Stephen O'Neill in the quarter finals or James Kielt throughout the league and the lis goes on ....................and on......

Give me a break.

OK, in the final, how many points will be scored from 30 yards out or further?

What about Cian Ward's two sideline points against Kerry, both them were about 50 metres from the goals

Maybe if they introduced 2 points for putting the ball over the bar beyond the '45 as an experiment during the league?

Don't think that would work, you would need camera evidence which would take a couple of minutes at a time, it would make it similar to Basketball.

Ps, where have you been recently, your not on much!
