Tradition, great team there but your No. 4 has me baffled, Jim Purcell (Kilkenny)? Did you mean Jim Treacy or Keiran Purcell? Both Kilkenny. Now, I'm not saying your wrong but if a Jim Purcell did exist he was way before my time... shoulderghost (Limerick) - Posts: 863 - 16/09/2009 12:32:13 427617 Link 0 |

Donegal Abroad.: To my mind, and I think that of most neutrals the Donegal team of '93 was robbed in that Ulster Final. PearseBro (Monaghan) - Posts: 459 - 16/09/2009 13:11:19 427667 Link 0 |

Well, I've eventually got around to naming the 15 hurlers that I've enjoyed the most during my time watching the game. An almost impossible task. By naming 3 Limerick players on it, I may be accused of favouritism. So be it! Damien Martin (Offaly) (First All-Star ever. Central to Offaly's rise as ahurling power. Great to stop penalties) Leonard Enright (Limerick) (Forwards rarely scored goals off him. 3 All-Stars at full-back. Great club stuff for the 'Well also for years and years) Brian Lohan (Clare) (What needs to be said? Legend!) Dick O'Hara (Kilkenny)(Technically perhaps not the best, but those swashbuckling bursts out of defence were great stuff to watch. Plus that fearsome beard !) Liam Dunne (Wexford) (Would put his head where another man wouldn't put his hurl, but could also put his opponent's head there) Seanie McMahon (Clare) (Read Brian Lohan) Paddy Prendergast (Kilkenny) A favourite of mine. Whatever he lacked, and it's damn hard to pinpoint what he did exactly lack, he made up for it in craft, fearlessness and total honesty. You could put your mortgage on him not to let you down Joe Hennessy Kilkenny.Supreme stickwork and so stylish. Had it all. 4 All-Stars in 3 different positions. Prob best at half-back.Tommy Walsh of mid-70's to mid-80's Frank Cummins (Kilkenny) The greatest I've ever seen. Colossus. Seemed to made of granite and equipped with every skill in hurling. Never tired, never taken off. Ciaran Carey (Limerick) The best Limk has produced since Cregan. Such energy, vision and verve. I even saw the staunchest Tipp supporters applauded him. Richie Power (Snr.) Kilkenny. Amazing wristwork and over-the-shoulder style. He made hurling look so easy. Better on the wing or mid-field. Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny) This guy is sheer dynamite. Could play him anywhere, even in goals and there's more to come from him. Jimmy Barry Murphy (Cork). What class in both codes! Won his first AI medal and All-Star in '73 (football) and his last in '86 (hurling). He was probably the first pin-up star of GAA, and it wasn't even realized when it was happening... 7 All-Stars (5 hurling, 2 football) Cormac Bonner (Tipperary) The viking from Cashel could sure get a crowd going in a way the even the more skillful Fox or English beside him never could. He made life so much easier for those two. Strong as a lion with a will of iron. Eamonn Cregan (Limerick). Cregan was the complete hurler. He had it all. He could play anywhere and do anything with a ball. Played center-back in AI win of '73 and won 3 All-Stars at No.15 (on the first ever All-Star team). Hurled from 1964-83 with Limerick. shoulderghost (Limerick) - Posts: 863 - 17/09/2009 10:26:43 428565 Link 0 |
