The greatest GAA upsets

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Saw this on another GAA website I use (shock horror I know) and thought I would open the debate to the fine followers of HS. What in your view was the greatest GAA shock or upset? Personally I would go for Antrim v Offaly in the 1989 Hurling Semi Final.

Antrim had beaten Offlay earlier that year in the league and indeed were a divison 1 team that year so not really a big of upset as some people may think. In fact a few years before Cork beat Antrim by a couple of points in the semi final and went on to beat ?? by about 10. In 91 Kilkenny beat Antrim in the Semi Final by 2 points.

The Cork boys clamping the Kerry' players cars in Mallow. €120.00 a pop. Very upsetting.

Biggest upsets were both involving Kerry and Waterford. 1957? in Football for Waterford and 1993 in Hurling for Kerry. Fermanagh beating Armagh in 2004 was a huge surprise. I suppose Monaghan v Armagh in 2003 was a huge shock for most people but I wasn't that surprised. I think Laois beating Antrim in Hurling this year was a bit of a shock for the suits in Croke Park!

Have to go for the 1980 Leinster final Offaly 3-17 Kilkenny 5-10.

People in Offaly were slaggin off their neighbours for travelling to the final and the attendance was small enough. Nobody gave Offaly a chance, but they took it and a year later were all-Ireland champions. Fairytale stuff considering most people nowadays remember Offaly winning the title in 94 or 98. For a county to make the same breakthrough now, it would have to be by someone like Laois, Carlow or Westmeath.

Steady on there Slasher lad Cavan have been languising in the footballing doldrums for years now and Antrim beat them in Ulster in about 2003 so I dont see this year`s win as a big upset. On the other hand Antrims victory over Donegal was a major shock.

Antrim beating Kilkenny in the all Ireland hurling semi-final.

After that the two Kerry games with Waterford, losing at football in 1957, and winning at hurling in 93 or whatever.

But think about the first one. Antrim, totally isolated from the strongholds, beating Kilkenny in the all Ireland semi?

I thought we would beat Offaly in 89. But the Kilkenny win? Got to be the biggest upset.

2OO4 Fermanagh upseting the odds to beat quality teams such as Cork and Armagh to reach the All Ireland semi final....really should have won that 2

Clare beating Kerry in the '92 Munster final was the biggest football upset I've seen. There has been nothing comparable in hurling. Antrim had came close to shocking Cork in '86 and Kilkenny in '87, so I was not too surprised when they made the breakthrough against Offaly in '89. Also, Waterford were a division 3 team when they lost to Kerry in '93, so the result was nowhere near as noteworthy as it would be nowadays. I'd pick Waterford beating Cork in '89 and Clare beating Cork in '93 as the biggest hurling upsets of the last 30 years. Both winning teams went into those games at a fairly low ebb and Cork were raging-hot favourites.
