Best Ulster teams ever

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Has to be as follows, with championships the currency !

1. Cavan - 5 All-Irelands, by a mile the most Ulsters
2. Down - 5 All Irelands but just a dozen Ulsters
3. Tyrone - 3 All-Irelands
4. Armagh - 1 All Ireland but recent Ulster Kings and now second most
5. Donegal - 1 fantastic classy All Ireland win gets them ahead of Monaghan and Antrim
6. Derry - All Ireland win sneaks them up a couple of spots higher than they should really be but the weakest of the Ulster All Ireland winners by a mile and perennial underachievers
7. Monaghan - Recently overtaken by Armagh as the second most Ulster SFC's
8. Antrim - Some great teams in the past and high on the Ulster Roll of Honour- unlucky in the past against Kerry
9. Fermanagh - Shame they haven't made the breakthrough, so close last year.

Excellent.

However this week the Tribune did a measure for this decade giving points for all Ireland's, provincial titles and such. Using that Antrim, and Monaghan, would still be a head of Donegal and Derry.

However, when you take in under age, Derry are well ahead, deservedly so, and Tyrone may well top he lot nowadays.

Why? Antrim always have, and always will, dominate Ulster in GAA matters, county and club level.

Nice to see others doing well after all these years.

As perpetual winners, we can afford to be magnanimous.

A revisionist at work. This Tyrone team would hammer any great Ulster side that has come before. If you think that these boys from the past having a fag at half time would even come near competing with Tyrone or any other modern team for that matter you are seriously deluded.

Yes Seanie - and the 2050 Cavan AI winning team would hammer the Tyrone team of this decade due to even more advanced training methods, better diet, the end of the Irish binge drinking culture (God forbid), better medicine/physio techniques etc. You simply cannot compare teams from different eras. You will find this a struggle as Gaelic Football apparently began in 2003 (and ended a couple of weeks ago)

DoireDownUnder you basically agree with me but decide to have a little dig at the same time?I did say Tyrone or any other modern era team.As a Derry person you believe that football started in 1993 then,is that your logic?

Now I imagine if the Cavan 1947-52 team were about now they would not be having fags at half time and losing THREE games in SIX years.

All things must be put in perspective. Back in the 1960s I suspect Tyrone may have had about 12 serious injuries in every match.

Patrique, run me by this perpetual winner thing again. You may just have been born the last time you won an Ulster Senior football trophy. You seem to hold on to the fact that youse can hurl a bit better than the rest of us in hurling, but at the big stage just not good enough. As for the clubs, I'm not sure but I would suggest that Armagh would have the shout on successful club teams

Patrique going on your logic of Ulster's best teams are you taking into account the clubs? That would surely put Derry ahead of Antrim???

down and cavan defo the top two the fact that they had no backdoor to relay on meant the games in each province would have been alot harder! teams now no they can get a second chance an dont push themselves i believe! without the backdoor would we all be talking about tyrone?? no id say we would be talking about armagh more than tyrone!

In matters GAA on the club scene Antrim are still well ahead of any other Ulster county.

By the reckoning here it would be Derry, not Armagh, despite Clan Na Gael great side in the 1970s.

HOWEVER I can't remember Derry having contested SEVEN all Ireland club hurling finals, with FOUR different clubs, including one WINNER. Can't remember Armagh either. I can't honestly see ANY Ulster county equal that, although I would love to be wrong.

TWO Antrim clubs in the football final, and Antrim clubs have contested SIX club camogie finals, THREE different clubs, and the current CHAMPIONS.

Rossa have appeared in finals in two sports, winning one, matched only by Bellaghy. Honourable mention to Eglish, the only Tyrone team ever in a club final I believe, in Camogie.

In total that makes 15 all Ireland club finals, featuring EIGHT different clubs. Nothing in Ulster anywhere near that I believe.

Ulster I said, if you look closely.

The Ulster championship used to mean something, before this back door stuff.

Maith thu Patrique. Our Camogs are in the Ulster Final this weekend I believe. The state of camogie in Tyrone is an absolute disgrace and the Tyrone County Board should be ashamed of themselves. My club Eglish have won the county title every year for as long as I can remember. Am I right in saying there are in fact only 4 senior camogie teams in the county? Although I am very proud of my clubs achievements, it appears all too easy for the girls.

Rio, I suspect you are right. And unless they start to get real competition in the county, they will start to struggle at provincial level, as illustrated by Antrim hurlers outside Ulster.

But Eglish's achievement in isolation is up there with the Down hurlers.

i always thought the derry and down teams of the 90s were great i think derry would have won more AIs if there was a back door and donegal were great they really put the work in to win their AI but i always say the antrim team that contested the AI against tip has to be the best to get to an AI final in hurling for them is like ireland getting to a world cup final they must have been one of the most committed teams ever in the gaa
