How could you not have Big Joe - was the only forward yesterday to consistently beat his man and contest for every ball. He has had an excellent year and shown great leadership to boot, so Meath 2010 cannot be without Joe. Team needs to buckle down, pick a consistent team with 2 or 3 regular subs (adding in S O'Rourke, K Reilly, McGill, Nestor, etc.) and get out of Div 2, getting on a winning run in the league will set us up rightly for Championship 2010 - it has worked for Cork and Kildare this year. Well done to the team for the enjoyment and pride they have given Meath supporters in 2009.

Before deciding on a starting fifteen one would have to consider how many lads might retire, are over the hill any or have nothing more to give. So let us consider the first fifteen as they have now become.

1 O'Rourke - Is becoming better with each game. Would want to place his kick-outs better. Keep.
2 O'Connor - Has the potential to become as good as Robbie O'Malley or Mark O'Reilly. Keep
3 Moyles - A serious weak link in the team. Never liked him as a back and have said so on many occasions. I think this man is a half forward and if kept should be played up there. Is very inspirational in the team though. No big enough or fast enough for full back. Gave away the penalty and was well beaten by Tommy Walsh for the second goal. Let go. I know I will be slated for this view.
4 Harrington - Overall had a good year. Had a good game yesterday but had a part to play in the mix-up which led to the penalty. Keep
5 Kenny - Didn't have the best of games yesterday but has been brilliant all year. Keep
6 McGuinness - I think he is the best CHB since McManus. Had a good enough game yesterday but allowed Kennally to roam all over the place and didn't pick up as much breaking ball as usual but that was probably because we lost mid-field. Keep
7 King - I have often been on this page defending King against adverse comment but yesterday he had a howler. Got a fair roasting and that ball he kicked into the corner on the Davin Stand was the last straw for me. I would be on the lookout for a replacement.
8 Crawford - Had a great year. Was playing on the most experienced and probably the best midfielder in the country yesterday and came off second best. Keep
9 Meade - This is a very under-rated player in my view. Is a natural at midfield and I think he would make an excellent fullback. Has the height, can catch a good ball and can tackle when needed. Keep
10 Byrne - Had a mixed year. Was sometimes brilliant but yesterday was not one of his better days. Still has a lot to give. Keep.
11 Sheridan - Like Crawford he has had the best year yet in a Meath shirt. Is probably trying to do too much himself. Has now become a very inspirational figure, which is needed. Gives the team a lift, like McEntee, Dowd, McDermot or Murphy before him.
12 S.Bray - has to be the most unfortunate players this year. Was badly needed yesterday. No question, Keep.
13 David Bray - Young man with a big future. Never stopped trying yesterday but it just didn't happen. Was in my opinion the most affected by the state of the pitch but will have to adjust quicker to adverse conditions.
14 Farrell - In my opinion he was, a few years back, the only decent inter county player we had. However I have been of the opinion all year that he has totally lost all his ability. Is too prone to injury. Is too-selfish with the ball. Demands the ball of other players and then wastes it. Like my comments on Moyles, I know I will be slated for this but he has passed his sell by date as far as I am concerned. Let go.
15 Ward - Played much better this year than previously. Can score the most difficult frees and sidelines. Probably the best marksman in the game today. However, Northmeathman pointed out on one occasion that Chris O'Conner had scored more points from play than Ward. He has however scored a few goals and that is an important factor. Keep

Part two to be sent.

Part two.

Others
Burke - Has been excellent whenever brought on or starting.
Mark Ward - Had a bad game against Dublin and hasn't been started since. Still has a lot to give.
McKeague - Cannot see what this man has contributeds. Not a fan.
Reilly - Good to see him back again. Would be my first choice no 3 if fit.
Queeney - Another man who didn't let himself, or the team, down whenever called upon.
McAnarney - Didn't see enough of him in the Summer to make a comment.
Shane O'Rourke - If Shane could only get himself fit and stay fit he would be a first team contender on the team every day.
D. Sheridan -Has something to offer if needed at Midfield.
So my team for 2010.
O'Rourke
O'Connor, Reilly ,Harrington
Kenny, McGuinness , Burke
Crawford, Meade
Byrne, Sheridan , Bray
Bray, Queeney, Ward
Alternatives if needed:
FB Meade, CHB Burke, CF D Sheridan & Mark Ward, CHF Queeney, RFF O'Rourke, FF Joe Sheridan. Sorry for being so long but had to give reasons for my views. I'm sure I'll be slated for a lot of what I have said. Now where did I leave Eamon's number.

Well, I think for next year, an objective should be getting into Division 1 in the league. Playing against the top teams can only improve us.

There are a few more lads from the recent minor teams that should be ready to come into the team.

What happened to Nestor? I thought he looked pretty decent against Wexford last yr before he had to go off.

Ard, agree with King and Moyles, King is living on his reputation at this stage I feel.
Still think Farrell has a lot to offer, still don't think he is fully fit or as sharp as he could be, with a few months off after club championships are finished to rest and get his body right, and an injury free league next year, I feel he is still well worth his place. Don't forget, we only scored 2 points from play yesterday, Farrell was one of these players. Think he'd be better served in the corner where he isn't a target man and will be more exposed against his man on a one and one situation where he can jink by him and slot over instead of being in the middle where he would have 3 or 4 marking him. Also agree that Cian Ward needs to step up and provide moe scored from play but his place kicking is without question

its too early to pick a team just yet but heres mine 1. Brendan Murphy ( Still playing with Trim. Maybe Persuade him to come back for a season. Very Solid keeper) 2. McGill( is a good marker) 3. Reilly(BEst we have) 4. Harro ( In my view best of our full back line this year) 5. Kenny (Bad game last day but has so much to contribute) 6. McGuiness ( Could Turn out a decent CHB) 7. O Connor(Hard to choose here. Considered Burke King O Connor N McAnerny. O Connor Could be the best of that bunch) 8. Crawford ( Great year if he doesnt retire he should be first choice) 9. Meade ( Should keep his Place) 10. Byrne ( Works so hard for the Team Galvin like) 11. Shane O Rourke ( If fit i think he could be very effective here) 12. Stephen Bray ( Best natural forward we have) 13. DAvid Bray( Will learn from this year) 14. Joe Sheridan ( I think this is his best position. Farrell has not been great this year and i dont think its Queeneys time just yet) 15. Cian Ward ( Deadly accurate from frees pity he doesnt contribute more from play) Subs : The Likes Of Ward , Queeny , King , Farrell , Burke would mean a good competition for places.

I love these threads. Why not wait til we at least finish the business end of the County championships and then make the predictions. there will be more changes to yesterdays lineup compared on 2010

brenden murphy sean curran(minor player of the year last year) Kevin Reilly(best full back in meath no question) Harrington( best marker we have) Kenny(most under rated player in meath) mcguinness(proved the best cb we have) King( still has a lot to offer, confidence went after his ff experiment) crawford(if he doesnt retire) Ward(still has something to offer, won 4 balls yesterday in ten minutes, meade is in my opinion over rated, works hard but not good enough. Byrne( poor game yesterday but was probably been marked by the best half back in ireland) Shane O'Rourke( worth a go) david bray(think it would be more effective to have stephen in the ff line) Stephen bray(one of the best corner forwards in ireland) joe(exceptional year) Ward(free kicks) subs worth bringing on moyles farrell alan nestor michael newman Queeney Burke chris oconnor sheridans

The real Árd Rí

Great post as always. But may I elaborate on a few of your observations.

P O'Rourke-good keeper, still very young and had a fairly good year. But against |Kerry, had some atrocious kickouts in the 2nd half
and some questionable soloing, but do believe he will grow into a top class keeper.

A. Moyles-a workhouse, heart of a lion, inspirational, and a leader, but not a fullback and getting on in years. In fact today I heard he was quite doubtful up until match time because the injections he needed were not having the effect that was expected. I liken him a bit to Martin O'Connell, when Seán had to deploy him as a fullback.
Owes nothing to Meath football, but has his day come?

C. King-=another loyal servant but who did disapoint me this year. The experiment at F/F may have sapped his confidence, but I did expect him to bounce back. But overall, one of our most consistent players for the last few years.

N. Crawford-Have been a critic for the last few years and for the most part, has proved me WRONG this year. However, with Nigel getting on in years, is it worth keeping him in the starting 15 or should we be blooding others?

B. Farrell-I dont know? Is he fully fit or......? Certainly showed class and loads of potential in 07, and then??????????? Has the ability I believe to be a top class forward, if injury free and focused. Maybe the corner might suit him better?

Anyway, I don't post often yet would be on here everyday, and always enjoy your posts.

Paddy O'Rourke is still very young and should develop into a top class keeper. However, he has been at fault a few times this year and his distributin yesterday left a lot to be desired. I agree that the management should try to persuade Murphy to come back for 2 years and at the same time develop Paddy. Murphy spent many years as understudy and it is a situation to be expected for up and coming keepers and 'Rourke would be the better for it. Generally agree with the other teams-however the management must go to club games with a very open mind, we need to be open to new players on the panel. Hopefully management are up to the task. My pick at the moment based on the current panel B. Murphy if he would return (D.Gallager & PO Rourke next options) C.McGill if fit (if not then C.OConnor) K. Reilly E. Harrington S.Kenny C.McGuinness M.Burke N. Crawford P. Byrne S. O'Rourke S.Bray C. Ward J. Sheridan J. Queeney Of course it is a panel game and players like O. Connor, M. Ward, B Farrell, C. King and hopefully new players identified from the club championships etc will be vital parts of the setup.

Anthony Moyles has got a lot of stick in the last few days and in fairness Sunday was not his finest hour in a Meath shirt. But this man has been our best warrior over the past 10 years. FB is a specialist position. It is very hard for any player to move in there to fill a gap as Moyles did this year. He managed ok through the year because he is a great player even though he was out of position. But on Sunday he was facing a higher standard of opponent and got caught out. I think he has a massive amount to offer next year maybe playing as an extra man around the middle of the field. Dont write him off just yet.
