Joe kernan

I presume that Mr Kernan's knowledge of the club scene is nil, which can only be regarded as a positive. It will be interesting to see who his selectors are.

I for one am getting sick of all this talk about this being the end of Galways traditional style of free flowing football. Yes, I presume kernan will place a large emphasis on defence and winning the ball at midfield....so, whats the problem...is this not exactly what we need? Our defence has just been conceding too many easy scores over the last few years and the Galway midfield has been as the big problem area in the team since Kevin Walsh retired. Our forwards, at times, have had to live off scraps because we haven't a midfield capable of securing possession. Besides, why does it have to be the end of stylish football for the team? Once the ball has been secured, there is no reason why Galway can't stay loyal to their traditional style, it's an effective style of attack as any. I think Kernan must see massive potential in Galway, he wouldn't have taken the job on otherwise. I say he is thinking along the lines of "if I can get these lads to defend properly and win possesion at midfield, there is no reason they can't beat any opposition". So come on lads, enough of the doom and gloom and romantic notions of sexy football....where has that got us over the last few years? I think it's an exciting appointment and with Big Joe at the helm I think Galway football could be headed in the right direction.

I was always of the opinion that Grimley was one of the main reasons why Kernan was succesful with Armagh(not to mention a good set of players). Since Grimley and Kernan have had a falling out I wouldn't be confident of Kernan being succesful with Galway. I would prefer to see someone like Mickey Ned as the new manager.

I agree wit Broadminded about winning is the most important, not the style of football. Galway needs to beat a team out side Connaught, not a poor team like Louth in 2004. This debate about the true home of football is mainly on for people on this website. There is no such thing as the true home of football, in my opinion.

An outside manager has no loyalties to any Galway club, which I also agree, but what if P.Joyce comes on the Galway management team? Do you think he will select a player from the north, south, east or west of Galway ahead of any of his club mates, or a guy he won an all-Ireland with in 1998-2001 ect….. If a.n other is from Carna/tuam/ annaghdown, ect…… and is a corner/wing forward and is in direct competition with Nicky Joyce, who do you think P.Joyce will pick??? Or if a.n other is in competition with Joe Bergin, Declan Meehan, Kirean Fitzgearld ect who do you think Joyce will pick…..

I would like to hope, that he would pick the best team possible for Galway, but if P.Joyce has soldiered with these guys and has a stronger relationship with them, Big Joe with probably choose these guys ahead as he will trust P.Joyce's opinion, and Joe Bergin, Declan Meehan, Kirean Fitzgearld have not been great since 2005…..

When O'Mahony left in 2004, Peter Forde came in with Ja Fallon, in 2007 Liam Sammon was with Richie Fahey. These guys can't make hard calls against guys they played with, and won All Irelands. It just does not work. What happened since John O'Mahony left in 2004, bugger all!!!

Galway needs a clean slate, with ever club footballer and county panelist given a fair chance. If this happens, the squad that lost against Donegal this year, will be totally different to the squad that hopefully will be involved in the All-Ireland this time next year.

The bottom line is, that Galway needs a management team that has no connections to the 1998 or 2001 teams, other wise I think its day da ja vue……….

Fair enough Galway5000. I hadn't factored that in when I was thinking about Padraic Joyce being a selector. It wouldn't be fair on the likes of Nicky Joyce either. NJ would not be able to have a bad game (if he made the panel). But I still think Alan Mulholland would be a good addition. So who else is there? I have a long list of NOs. Maybe Frank Morris? There has to be someone from Corofin, a club that seems to be always there or there abouts in the championship and a club we haven't tapped.
But I suppose it would be up to Big Joe.

Think we should give Padraic Joyce more credit if he is part of the backroom team. He proved as part of Sean Boylan's Int Rules mgt group that he is capable of making choices based on capability. Those teams weren't over inflated with Galway players and one player Finian Hanley who got a run was a younger member of squad and he certainly benefited from the experience. What a great full back he's making!! PJ is a great reader of the game, playing and training with the existing panel gives him a good in-sight into their true capabilities!!! I welcome the arrival of Joe K and believe he will search the county for the best talent and will put the best team out which is what is needed for Galway football.

Word is Alan Mulholland is taking over the U-21's. Kernan will only be doing the senior team. If Kernan does a couple of years in charge by the time he leaves hopefully we might have two Galway men who will be ready to take the step up in Kevin Walsh and Alan Mulholland.

well lets be glad that joe is picking the team rather than ye lot of high stool saturday night managers.
there will be little or no changes to the panel this year but it is more of a process than a whole clearout.
he's not our saviour the players in the current panel are there on merit. nevermind your selections from junior clubs..there may be some decent footballers down there and if there good enough they'll get their chance. the senior championshiop possesses the majority of the countys best players and that will never change.

and cullinane flaherty bane pj and damien burke are not up to it..

re previous post damien burke being referred to as a tight marker.. conor mortimer scored 1-2 on him in just 1 half and his display against donegal was lethargic.
paul doherty is by far the best keeper in the county and if any of ye bothered goin to the q/final between tuam and caltra that was well proved.
caltra have one or 2 more up to county standard and that would also be put with tomas fahy and conor dots. toto o griofa needs to be monitored and it seems mike martin is another wasted talent. these players seem to be the pick of that all ireland winning team.. there is potential for a good galway side but it will take a lot of work from the big man to change our mentality maybe in 3 or 4 years we might taste success

Very harsh to blame most of those scores on Damien Burke. Mortimer scored a point after Bradshaw kicked a sideline ball straight to him and there is very little he could have done about the goal. Mortimer palmed it in from 3 yards out after his brother ran free at goal. Apart from rugby tackling Mortimer there is not much he could have done.
