Would have liked to have seen a change, I just feel he has done all he can do with the team. Hopefully I am proved wrong!

I can't believe that a thread has started barely 5 minutes after this story is out and none of you are interested in the football within your own county! You people have spent 2 months talkin about it. What more is left to say? You might as well just copy and paste your old messages from all the different threads about Banty!

I feel this has brought the preparations of a new team back by a couple of years. Sure we all loved banty at some stage. Division 2 titles are great to get but are really micky mouse cups. The last two years ive seen the football we play become more negative and at times hard to watch. Would have liked to see someone else take the reigns and lead monaghan into another new ere. I see banty staying on as more of a set back and it'll now take longer for a new team to develop. I just hope he proves us wrong

I guess you can't begrudge the guy having one more year at it, but I'd have that nagging suspicion as well that he has taken us as far as he can. Hopefully league football at the top level will have us in the form to hit the ground running from the off in the championship - something we've not done this past two years against both Fermanagh and Derry.

I think he'd also need to tighten up on the discipline within the team during the big championship games. It's all very well being in the opposition's face and all, but the sending off in the Fermanagh game in 2008 went a long way to us losing a game that was there for the taking. The same could be said for the Derry game at Celtic Park this year where we got sucked into all the niggly stuff and forget to play the football to win another game that was there for the taking.

How you'd go about instilling them with that discipline is another matter, but then that's why Banty is (still) the boss! Roll on 2010!!

Good news for the county.

And to those who think that Banty has brought us as far as he can, do you honestly believe that there are willing candidates out there who could take this crop of players further?

I'm glad The Banty is staying on. Some very good cases for Banty to go were made on this forum. Reports that players wanted him to stay on swung it in favour of him staying on, as far as I could see.

None of us want to do a Westmeath and go down again after one season. We need to stay in the top flight, build greater strength in depth. Continuity is needed, not a rebuilding process and we have the players at present to stay in Division 1.

The quality of the football from Monaghan was of a very high quality over most of the League. Things went down with the League final and Championship. Yes we need to sort out the discipline - the Kildare game highlighted that to a large TV audience. Kildare gave plenty too, but certain players were too easily goaded, with repeated 3rd man intervention.

Next up - the trainer and backroom team...

Great news to see Banty staying on!

I was very fearful that this could have been the end of Monaghan. There is great loyalty in the squad and the guys have a huge amount of respect for Banty. He also would not have taken on the job if the players did not give him their full support, so it looks like we will wont loose too many of the current team.

Lets be fair to banty. He has moved us on a lot and taken tough decisions with selectors in the past in a bid to freshen things up. There is no one more committed and suitable for the job and you know he will give it his all again and make tough decisions to freshen up the mgt team. Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe he has got the best out of Monaghan up until now?

Hoping for a good league campaign and a good draw for the Ulster Championship - we need silverwear. Lets support the team and give the chap a break.

Watch out for Monaghan in 2010!!

Banty deferrs his decision. Think this is an indication that maybe McElkennon wont be on board next year. He had taken the past 2 years out of teaching and is returning this year. Well thats the word anyway. What coach could Banty get to replace him? Not many of his quality about but maybe it will bring in a new freshness just like McElkennon did when he first joined. Paddy Tally is looking the Down job, if he doesnt get it he could be an option. A former AI winning coach and very much in touch with modern methods. Paul Grimley possibly, hes coaching Clontibret at the moment another man with AI winning experience. Cant see him leaving Kildare for a coaching role, Armagh post might be his yet! Maybe even Ryan Porter, coached Donegal when Brian McIver was in charge, he's very highly rated. Have we any coaches within the county that could get the nod? Paul O'Connor maybe...has worked wonders with vocational schools and done well with our minors, infact he's probably doing too much good work at that level to move him up the ladder yet!!
Or who knows, maybe Marty Mc will be back to give it one final lash!!
Any thoughts?

Given the dearth of talent around I'm glad the Banty is staying. Hopefully he will have recognised that we have become far too defensive for a team whose main strengths lie in attack. Also next years league should actually be about blooding new talent instead of just saying it and then reverting back to the tried and tested. The bottom line is that unless he changes his outlook on tactics and how to use the league, there's not much point in him coming back because all we will do is come up short again in Ulster. Next years Ulster is a very attainable target. Tyrone are the only team who are better than we are and this will be Brian Dooher's last year.Without him they aren't the force that they were.

Agree fully with you Maguire01, + the players & Banty obviously feel they have another "kick in them", so why not give it a go!

I cant agree I think its like 1 step foward and 2 steps back.We needed a change, fresh ideas, new blood.Bantys game was always about stopping the opposition with negitive tactics. His main downfall is his loyalty,we all know his starting 15 and who will be taken of and put on.New players need to be given a chance and I think under Bantys reign this wont happen. He has done a great job so far but I think the time is right for a change.
