I am so ambivilant right now as to who is better. Both belong to different times when emigration sent so many of our best players overseas. The GPA posting intercounty players CV's online has negated the need for NY/LN teams. If one looks at the use of Gaelic Park nowadays even the most fervant gael would readily admit that its best days were in the past. caughtredhanded (Tyrone) - Posts: 602 - 16/08/2009 01:14:43 393538 Link 0 |

Here's a subtopic: Who's better New York, London or Clare? London gets the vote for me The_16th_Man (Clare) - Posts: 251 - 17/08/2009 22:09:31 394961 Link 0 |
On a point of order, I would have to stress that cabbage is a lot tastier than brussel sprouts. banner_boy (Clare) - Posts: 1285 - 17/08/2009 22:18:49 394984 Link 0 |

I say lets solve this debate. Reestablish the international series that had been played at Parnell Park (adding other venues if needed) during the week leading up to the All Ireland football final. This would spark a huge interest. County boards from Europe, North America and AustralAsia could enter sides to compete. If there are other locations with teams, add them as well. No shun intended, just not sure if you are out there. Financially it would be a huge undertaking, if so why not hold the tournament bi-annually if needed. I hope this competition does take place. lostintime (USA) - Posts: 533 - 18/08/2009 13:33:45 395582 Link 0 |
I think London would win but at the same point is very hard for teams like London/New York ever to get to a decent level. As soon as one of the players is performing well he gets a call from back home to play with hsi club/county and off they pop home to mammy. Fair play to them but until there is a huge amount of investment to get kids all over UK/USA playing will never get better. I know there is many clubs that promote GAA but an example is that my nephew played football from age of 8 until 10 and then all of a sudden the school stopped the training. Luckily he has a club nearby so he still gets some exposure to GAA but nothing like you would back in Eire. ced1980 (Roscommon) - Posts: 62 - 18/08/2009 15:36:17 395799 Link 0 |

caughtredhanded I have a message for you. I have to laugh at your comments. The Irish economy both north and south is in dire straits at the moment and it'll take years and years for a proper recovery. Have you looked at some of the recent unemployment data or checked out how many highly qualified young graduates are signing on the dole? Unemployment is set to reach 15% by next year. Wages in the north are a joke in comparison to everywhere else in Ireland and the UK and that is assuming you are one of the lucky ones to actually get a job. Ireland is the second most expensive country in Europe and house prices are still very high in comparison to the average wage. There is only one inevitable consequence from all of this. Young people are going to emigrate as they did before. In the words of the Wolfe Tones "Our best asset is our best export too". Mark my words GAA in London will get stronger as a result of this. New York GAA may also improve but it'll be difficult because its so difficult to get in there these days. Many young Irish now head to Australia so it could soon become a new GAA stonghold if they're not recruited to play Aussie rules. caughtredhanded County: Tyrone Posts: 127 393538 I am so ambivilant right now as to who is better. In fairness what have New York ever done. London hurlers in 2 finals this year, i'll admit the footballers are crap but the hurlers were a puck of a ball from winning the Nicky Rackard and won the league. Buster66 (UK) - Posts: 119 - 20/08/2009 13:19:58 398135 Link 0 |

Kevin Brady, thank you for the repost however it is obvious that the current employment situation in both the North and South of Ireland does not bear any resemblance to that of the late 19th century to late 20th century. We are now in a different world where Ireland is not governed like a third world country in a pathetic attempt at self sufficiency. People nowadays are better educated and more entreprenurial. Gone are the days when a 16 year old was packed off to his uncle in NY because there wasn't enough work on the 20 acres for him. Quotes from the Wolfe Tones show just how detached from reality you are. caughtredhanded (Tyrone) - Posts: 602 - 20/08/2009 14:22:14 398206 Link 0 |
