Young Player of the Year

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Smith scored in every games he played. Also got goals against Laois and Wicklow. And got points from play against Dublin and Tyrone.

The criteria for young player of the year is that it has to be your debut year in championship action and you have to be eligible for U21. That immediately rules out the likes of Murphy, Kerrigan and Alan Smyth who all have championship experience under their belts last year.
David Bray is over 21 even though it is his first year so who will be up for it. I remember a couple of years MJ Tierney was nominated because there were feck all others who qualified under the scheme.
Under 23 and in your first two years of championship would be a much better qualifying criteria.

I think David Bray is 24...he was a sub on the Meath U-21 team in 2006, I think you have to be U-21 for the award.

Going on that criteria Roger the field will be fairly narrow...can't think of many players who would qualify: maybe Colm O' Neill (Cork)?

I don't think you're correct Roger, Cathal Naughton was nominated for young hurler of the year last year, that was his third year with the Cork seniors.

Re. Roger
Think you called that wrongly. Cha Fitzpatrick won it in 2006 but started the All Ireland final in 2004 at corner forward. Seamus Hickey won in 2007 and he started every game apart from the 1st round in 2006 so clearly it doesnt have to be your debut season to be nominated. Is it being in your debut season or u21 that qualifies a player?

Rodger ur definately wrong. Sean Cavanagh won the award in 2003 and it was not his first season with Tyrone!! There are a number of players that could win this award from a tyrone point of view its a pity that none of the younger players were able to break into the side becasue we have some outstanding talent. I would vote for O'Shea think he is outstanding but from ulster point of View Paddy Cunningham or Micheal Murphy

Football: Nominations- Michael Murphy(Donegal)
Aidan O Shea (Mayo)
Alan Smith(Kildare) or Paddy Cunningham(Antrim)
Winner- Murphy
Unlucky to miss out are James Kielt and James Loughry (neither in Championship long enough). David Bray (if elligible) and Colm O Neil could still win.

Can't see past Noel McGrath for the hurling. He has stood up when more experienced team mates have drifted out of games.

Paddy Cunningham would get my vote. To captain an Antrim side into the Ulster final at 23 years of age is no mean achievement and to lead the way with the points tally. Simply superb.

Toss up between 2 players who exited at the qtr final stage in Football. Murphy: Donegal and O Shea: Mayo. Given the teams that Donegal put out along the way (Galway, Derry) I think it should go Murphys way.

Noel McGrath. Another big performance might even see him nominated for senior player of the Year. Not bad for an 18 year old
