No matter who we send we will not be able to match the aussies physically. We should concentrate on players with pace and excellent ball handling skills with a view to moving the ball quickly and keeping possesion. Players like Brogan, Forde, Meehan, McGuigan, Dillon, Gardiner, Cananagh, Gooch, Heaney, Ryan, Marc and Tomas O Se etc. Obviously u will need the Dara O se's McGranes and Cantys of this world down the spine of your team but we should try and play to our strengths which is pace and extra skill levls with the round ball. Otherwise if we try to mix it we will lose. unclegerry (Mayo) - Posts: 1223 - 28/05/2008 11:15:55 24771 Link 0 |
ball boy hit the nail on the head there...Ireland were beaten at our own game.we tried to intimidate them and got beaten out the gate. It really is laughable when people say GAA is almost a professional sport. when you compare a Aussie RUles Player to a GAA player there is no comparison. we used to beat the aussies because they wouldnt take it seriously and just use the series as an excuse for a holiday. then that sheedy lad took over and didnt pick the high profile players.instead he took lads who were reletively unknown in Australia and who he thought would be good at the sport. they duly delivered and bet us convincingly. howshecuttin (Longford) - Posts: 376 - 28/05/2008 12:56:59 24876 Link 0 |

we need fast hungry players not 25 angry ones. the aussies picked their last squad primarily on speed. the fact that they were agressive as well totally screwed us. its not big or angry men we need its fit ones that have the desire to play. i would pick 25 from the beaten qualifiers including the last 8. get them to a training camp for three months away from all ireland distractions and coach them in the finer arts throw in the irish aussies and we might at least be competitive. the tyrone players in the last series plus the kerry boys werent interested and were even bordering on shy. the longford lads or mayo men of this world would have a big stage tom prove that they can play. what you think. reddoctor (Tyrone) - Posts: 1241 - 28/05/2008 16:53:01 25087 Link 0 |

Marty McGrath Fermanagh, if he plays the way he did the other day we could expect quite a few marks a great playmaker and maybe ideal beside the likes of another big fielder such as Ciaran Whelan (even though im not fussed on his attitude hes probably the best feilder in the game). Probably most definitely bring Francie Bellew and Ronan Clarke two of the strongest men in ulster football, my team would be: North Side Gael (None) - Posts: 1076 - 29/05/2008 09:45:51 25307 Link 0 |
not a bad team NSG. what about the irish aussie rules players though. watched marty clarke playing for collingwood in highlights last night. really looks like a class act samin10 (Armagh) - Posts: 2434 - 29/05/2008 14:26:02 25564 Link 0 |
Good team NSG but definately need the irish aussie rules boys.. need to make good use of the pro's we have, duno bout vaughan i dont rate him from play or out of his hands.. benny coulter would be my first choice of th rish forwards, great hands! speedy12 (Fermanagh) - Posts: 592 - 30/05/2008 17:19:34 26288 Link 0 |
remember the fact that theres a meath man over this side so i think there will be more then just graham geraghty on the starting team. sure even kevin reilly played two years ago and he's desperate meathfan1 (Meath) - Posts: 231 - 30/05/2008 19:38:23 26318 Link 0 |
LADS THINK ALOT OF COULTER IN THE RULES,STRONG,HARD,FAST,CATCH A BALL,AND HE CERTAINLY GETS STUCK IN..REALLY THINK HIM AND MCDONNELL HAVE BEEN BRILLIANT AT THIS GAME.WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM PLAY WITH CLARKE TO.AS A DOWN MAN IT MIGHT SOUND BIASED BUT ITS FACT OVER 5 YEARS HE PROBABLY IS OUR BEST PLAYER..THINK LOTS OF PLAYERS NAMES BEING BANISHED ABOUT THE THREAD AND NOT ENOUGH OF HIM..THINK PEOPLE ARE MAYBE FORGETTING HIM BECAUSE DOWN ARE NO LONGER AT THE TOP..ANY ONE AGREE? 121andun (Down) - Posts: 54 - 30/05/2008 21:46:07 26340 Link 0 |
i don't really agree with NSG's team but that is only a matter of opinion. it is hard to see francie bellow, ciaran whelan, dara o'se and graham geraghty even going to australia, let alone starting. the inclusion of mark vaughan is also a surprise for me and as was said above we need to make use of the professionals we have already. but it is very hard to even try to pick this time as there will be a lot of mitagating circumstances in between like injuries, club commitiments and players not wanting to travel. however if i was to pick a team, i would go a youthful approach with all players 6ft plus and also ones who have a bit of a reputation as a hard men. kevin reilly is almost tailor made for the game. he also was one of ireland's better performers in 2006. Loyal2TheRoyal (Meath) - Posts: 4522 - 30/05/2008 23:33:32 26359 Link 0 |
The Aussie Rules forwards are both able to run huge distances and take high kicks which rules Bellew out by a country mile....Where are the likes of Coulter, McDonnell, SML, Cullen, Brogan who have been good at the game??? Dubsforsam1 (Dublin) - Posts: 164 - 31/05/2008 12:59:50 26416 Link 0 |
i would go for a lot of pacey lads like killian young and peadar byrne...i wouldnt have all big lads...theres no point in trying to compete physically man for man...if you have a team with a mixture of ball carriers and big men then i would say thats how australia would be beaten meathfan1 (Meath) - Posts: 231 - 31/05/2008 16:32:25 26446 Link 0 |
think we should not be exposing our great players to such thugery.Take 25 of our top criminals from some of our overcrowded jails, put Pat Mc Enaney in the middle and watch the Aussi s melt. GAA has no place taking part in this game. border Gael (Monaghan) - Posts: 920 - 31/05/2008 22:46:17 26494 Link 0 |
