unfortunately for us, you could pick the 25 hardest GAA players in the country and if they decided to try and get physical with the aussies, there would only be one winner. It sickens me to say it but its true. kimbap (Mayo) - Posts: 81 - 23/05/2008 14:35:43 22937 Link 0 |
They went for the bigger more physical player last time and they were beaten off the field. Ireland teams usually perform better with faster more skillfull players. JamesMayo (Mayo) - Posts: 126 - 23/05/2008 15:00:22 22957 Link 0 |
definately think kevin cassidy, eamonn o'hara, shane ryan, clarke, mcdonnell, few monaghan and meath men, tomas and dara o'se, mccabe, donaghey, cavanagh, coulter, doherty and mccloy. samin10 (Armagh) - Posts: 2434 - 23/05/2008 15:25:52 22981 Link 0 |

We need a mixture of speed and power and if we did try to take them on physically they would win...we need guys who can win high and contested balls and who can take a tackle..... Dubsforsam1 (Dublin) - Posts: 164 - 23/05/2008 19:22:32 23068 Link 0 |

Have to have big strong athletic men, there's no reson why we shouldnt be competing with them physically. Look at 2 years ago 1 of the aussies made a burst at kieran mc geaney and mc geaney fliped him. my selection wud be NorthMonaghan (Monaghan) - Posts: 100 - 24/05/2008 21:30:28 23188 Link 0 |
Some interesting selections. What about 'the Rock' from Cork? Also Niall McCusker of Derry - he is the hardest man in Derry football. Cassidy of Donegal, Gormley of Tyrone, Galvin of Kerry. Doireboy (Derry) - Posts: 30 - 25/05/2008 13:44:36 23232 Link 0 |

we need to send big tough physical lads out there that can be spared from the gaa i.e. those that are not really at the races- sent the armagh and dublin team out so i can cheer australia again-also the aussies are great at getting us to realise that gaa players are not 10% of what we make them out to be as athletes ball-boy (Mayo) - Posts: 4211 - 26/05/2008 12:13:11 23502 Link 0 |
some people are sayin some tough men in gaa alright... but one player ya have all left out is Tom Kelly of Laois who has been the best player for ireland over the last couple of games against the coca cola drinking aussie's bono (None) - Posts: 36 - 26/05/2008 13:58:16 23607 Link 0 |
marc O'Se said he wont play it again..cant say i blame him..the musnter team would find it hard to compete with them in the physical stakes..they are phenomenal athletes plain and simple. a serious review of the rules would want to happen. the only way to beat the aussies is with skill and speed...no matter if we put 15 kieran mcgeeneys out we would get hammered... players like tommy freeman, darren o'sullivan, alan brogan, mattie forde, paddy bradley etc...fast players that also have skill...they might not be the biggest but we need to try a different approach. howshecuttin (Longford) - Posts: 376 - 26/05/2008 15:53:09 23754 Link 0 |
A particular type of player is requires for the hybrid code. Height, strengh, skill and agility. No mullakers, no donkeys and no 9 stone Gooch-types. My list would include among others: McCloy, Lockhart, Paddy Bradley, Kavanagh, McDonnell, Canty, OSé X2, Donaghy, Tom Kelly, Moyles, Kevin Reilly, Geraghty, Bryan Cullen and Joyce as the experienced old favourites. Put in some new blood like Finian Hanly, Tommy Walsh (Kerry & Wicklow), Killian Young, Brendan Quigley and Paul Finlay. Plus the AFL Irish like Begley, Kennelly, Setanta and especially Clarke and I feel wed have a serious hardy outfit that can play ball in our, more refined way. Then we would be able for the belts without pandering to thier way of playing. spudenator (Laois) - Posts: 1052 - 26/05/2008 15:54:25 23757 Link 0 |
thats the approach pete mcgrath took and we got hammered. too many of the so-called skillfull and fast players did not want to know. stephen oneill and owen mulligan had superb seasons in 2005 and won allirelands as soon as they went to take on the austrailians they did not want to know. they were not the only ones and i cant say i really blame them as they were not suited to it. we need big players who are also skillfull and fast. samin10 (Armagh) - Posts: 2434 - 26/05/2008 16:08:53 23774 Link 0 |
