Under 16 championship

Congrats to Claremorris, deserved to win on the balance of play. Goal chances weren't taken by Ballina and some sloppy frees in the first half. I'd question the Claremorris Physio who was obviously under the direction of the management to slow down the play and break the rhythm of the game because all he was doing was stretching the calf muscles of the Claremorris players and applying ice for about 5 seconds which does nothing.

A neutral assessment of the game.
Ballina looked like they were going to run riot in the first 20 mins. However, once C'morris got going they never really let up bar a 10-minute spell in the second half. Ballina seemed to lose their composure as the game went on. I can understand their frustration with all the stoppages in the second half, but that is the way the game has gone nationally, and will continue until the GAA does something about it. The ref tried his best by getting players to go off for treatment.
Ballina did themselves no favours with the amount of stray /hopeless passes. I counted at least three balls kicked over the end line of sideline in the second half. C'morris had great leaders form the fullback line, especially the fair haired corner back who made up for his lack of pace with his great reading of the game and positional sense. The full back was immense and one I'm sure we'll see more of in the future.
Overall, the better side won on the day but Ballina look capable of better than what they showed last night. Their day will come if they can improve on their mental discipline and learn to keep their shape on the field. It was a hard but fair game and exciting through to the end - credit to both teams and the officials.

As regards your comment about after, I did not see anything amiss??

1-11 to 1-10. I'd agree with the assessment made by Dad. Regarding the stopages and " can understand their frustration with all the stoppages in the second half, but that is the way the game has gone nationally". Don't you think it's pretty pathetic that this type of behaviour is present in under 16 club football? The supposed bad sportsmanship by Ballina players at the end was matched in spades by Claremorris players lying down, obviously under the direction of the management to do so.

Tighe was Ballina's best player, drove on in the last ten minutes. The two Regans up top looked dangerous when the got the ball. Leroy Nevin unlucky enough to be taken off as he looked dangerous running at goal.

No ballinaman they were lying down because they probably started crying... Knowing them...Like they didnt love themselves enough in clairmorris.... Cant see them winning minor next year anyways.. It was a fluke how they won it last year!!!!

Gorman did well enough, tried hard, opted for the long ball without much direction a bit too often but did his best. Was caught for height on their man of the match, number 8 Quirke.

Predno1.. Learn to spell the name of the place before you go shootin your mouth off!... When you have 3 county titles under your belt then you can talk!.... Claremorris were under no instruction to stay down during the game. It was a very high intensity match, and these lads dug deep and gave all they had, til their legs were giving up... The lads who were going down had injuries going into the game, and there was no bad sportsmanship intended.... Some of it was due to Ballina lads coming in with late challenges anyway.... Hard Luck Ballina!

went to the game as a neutral very enjoyable and the better team won. pleasure to watch young quirke(8)and coleman (3) for c.morris both stood up when the chips were down. for me these lads are marquee players. ballina have lads of equal ability but they lacked discipline concentration at key moments in the game. with 10 mins to go 3 points down but played as if 20 this comes from management which i think was lacking

as a neutral i thought ballina would win marginally due to their outstanding league performances, however on the day claremorris were the better team and deserved the win. it was a good game until maybe the last 10 min were foul play crept in on the ballina side and a bit of play acting by claremorris too. thought coleman (3) and quirke (8) for claremorris were impressive, and tighe (4), regan (13) were also very good for ballina. surely these lads will feature in the mayo minor team of next year or the year after definately.

PredNo1- Come on like,in all fairness Claremorris have won the U14 championship,U15 league and U16 championship two years in a row! This can hardly be classed as a fluke.

Ya, the players mentioned really shone and it was great to see, hopefully they'll keep it up and would be great to seem them in Mayo jerseys in a few years because they looked like quality players. 2 of the long stopages when Claremorris players went down were not due to injury, the Physio on both occassions simply stretched their calf muscles by applying pressure to the sole of the foot upwards, no other treatment was done. Better team won the match in fairness, pity bout the disruptive tactics employed though.

As a neutral observer I have to say the final was rather disappointiing. Not from a results perspective but more from the disappointing performances put in by players from both teams, with particular reference to Ballina who are capable of far superior performances. After getting to grips with the programme and realising with the help of a very kind Claremorris lady that the Ballina line out was not as listed.Fair play to Ballina that they had a corner forward that could also play a fine game in wing back position. With their fullback out due to injury their centre half back had to move in to fullback position where it must be said he did a very fine job, put would he probably have been much more valuable to them in a more central position as he had played against Crossmolinal in the North Final, where he very much dominated the game. Hats off to Ballinas corner backs, in particular No4.At midfield Claremorris No 8 was outstanding. He used his height and strength to dominate the centre field. Ballina's mid have shown throughout the season that they can play a much better game than they did. Ballina were broken right across their half forward line, but their corner forwards, particularly the No 15 put in very fine performances. No 15 I expect we will see him someday in county jersey. Best for Claremorris were No5, No8, No3. Best for Ballina were No4, No 15, No6. Claremorris played outstandingly and to their absolute limit, which really showed throughout the second half when management employed disruptive tactics to cover tired players. Good sportsmanship, this is not and only brings a squad into disrepute. If you cannot be trusted to play the game fair the entire county will always question your true winning capabilities. You are better than that lads! Ballina;s performance was below par. They are far superior to what they presented on the night as was demonstrated throughout the season, not only in the league and the North Mayo Championship where they took a much tougher fight to the county final than did Claremorris but anybody who may have been fortunate enough to attend the Beanie Murphy Cup in Ballina some weeks back can stand witness to the capabilities of these lads. Their performances throughout the day put them not only as a dominateable force in Mayo but also in Connacht.
