Ciaran Whelan - Dublin footballing legend

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Ciaran Whelan just announced his Retirement from Inter County Football. He will be greatly missed from our team. A True Legend and a gentleman off the pitch too. Huge loss to the Dubs. I for one wish him well and thank him sincerely for all his efforts in the Dublin jersey...
The greatest player from Dublin never to win a Senior All Ireland Winners Medal.... ( in my view anyway )
Thanks for the memories Whelo... Atha Cliath Abú.

Reckon Jayo will be next unfortunately, and maybe one or two others also... :o(

The man was a work-horse!! It was a pity that after 14 years at inter-county senior football that he never got his hands on a all-ireland medal...
But mark my words... Dublins day will come..and this came from a tyrone supporter;)

I think this thread is to basically thank Whelo for his service to Dublin football, being overly critical is another days discussion, he worked hard and put in some great performances for the blue jersey, he will be remembered by dublin fans in a positive light in a similar way to other great midfielders such as Tommy Carr and Sheedy who never won all-ireland medals but still showed that if they had a bit more luck and the right people around them, things could have been so different. Thanks Whelo.

I dont normally venture onto other counties sites but I have to say along with Darragh O'Se, Whelan has been a joy to watch over the years, Forget all the stupid comments from 'innocent' Meath men etc the site of Ciaran Whelan leaping in the air onto an oppositions kick out and powering forward to kick a trade mark point has been IMO one of the best sights in Gaelic football in modern times, a true athlete and of the field a gentleman, Next years championship will be all the poorer without him

fatfullforward County: Cork Posts: 11 388511 ARE YE FOR REAL?? the most over hyped player in the history of the gaa, he should have got red against kerry for elbowing mahony (and thats from a cork supporter) 2 he never played for a full 70 mins and 3 he NEVER got the better of o se on the big day! over hyped by the red top media, he wouldn come near o se, mc dermott or tohill! Well said fatfull Would be probably the most redcarded player in GAA history was it not for his unfounded reputation and Dublins tendency to over hype everything.

Second best midfielder in the country over last 10 years without a shadow, pure genius the lad. He is a big loss to the game.

Well Gallimh 73 you truely are a sad case. Your comments on big Ciaran are shameful. The man is a legend. A natural talent, with unbelieveable pace, passion....you name it, the list of great qualities he posseses are endless and even those from other counties all around the country are quick to acknowledge this. The man was an inspiration to his team mates and I know the lads will miss him for umteen reasons, not to mention us DUBs fans...Its awful that the chap now walks away with no AI medal and it was even worse to think he dident start any championship game this year under the new management. Ciaran, I salute you, I thank you for all the wonderful memories, they will live long in the hearts of all Dublin Fans, you also made the people of Raheny very very proud. Will there ever be another like ye, I have my doubts.......Slan........agus go raibh mile mile maith agat..........

Good Luck to him, tough as nails.... think the next wave of dub midfielders will be better equiped for the job though!
none the less he probably was one of the best for this decade...o'se, kavanagh, whelan, murphy
