Thomas Cook workers

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

isn't great to see sinn fein supporting the employees of a british travel agents, who have refused a very generous 5weeks per month redunancy instead of the standard 2 weeks that irish workers usually get. for those that don't know the employees want 8 weeks. sad to see anyone lose their job but in the current climate they have been offered a good deal

Absolutely agree. Was let go in June 2008 and qualified for no redundancy as I wasn't there long enough. So was on the dole with a 2 month old child. I sympathised with the Thomas Cook workers until I heard about the deal they were getting. 5 weeks for every year of service is a great deal. Where I'm working now we have let 100 go in the last 9 months and no one (Directors included) got anything above Statutory.

I see they sent in the riot police to rid the offices! G7 must be having a summit in Dublin this week, Shame on the powers that be that they have to use heavy handed tactics on a hand full of Mummy's and granny's only trying to save their jobs!

Thank god that the woman who give birth in the office when the Police raided had a baby Girl because I doubt she would have called it Thomas if it had a been a boy. Congratulions to you and your Husband/Partner

Please. just because you may have been up chimneys from the age of six, doesn't mean everyone should. In short, those with bad redundancy terms should not wish those terms upon everyone else.

That attitude alas reminds me of the poor misguided working class Unionists in N.Ireland for 50 years. "We had nothing and we didn't complain". THey should have complained, and that is the tragedy of the North.

So maybe or maybe not Thomas Cook have good terms, but debate it on its merits, do not begrudge some people something simply because you do not have it.

Do not covet thy neighbour's goods. (or his wife)

Thomas Cook are actually German owned, TUI I believe is the parent company, not that it has any bearing on the situation!

Forthyfive, you seem to have a problem with the police !! They have to act on a court order and they were not in riot gear at all. What i saw on the news were the guards coming out one by one with the people who were sitting in and actually talking to them as they left. The judge in the case was also very lenient and understanding towards the protesters. There were no complaints of police brutality at all but smiles and understanding by both sides, Please dont attempt to make something seem worse than it is. There was no bad feelings whatsoever as far as i could see. Have you a hidden agenda ?

Hipster, get a grip. This was never going to go on for long. While everyone has sympathy for the people losing their jobs the police have no say in it whatsoever and have to act on a court order. It is a court decision !! There was not even a scuffle and it was done in good humour !! Keep personal gripes out of it. It has nothing to do with SinnFein at all, they are only doing their usual stunt by jumping on the bandwagon !!

i would be a workers party man old tomas what a true politician but tell me this what would happen if say store street went on strike what would happen then would we ask the army or get the psni to rid the station of these pesky prostesters , there are long hard roads ahead for us and using the guards is not the way to start the ball rolling

Correct Hipster, but the police have no say in it at all !! They act on orders. Do you think they want to be in these positions ? Who would want to police a Love Ulster Parade or Shell Protest for Gods sake ? If you are going to make a statement about something that we all can see on the News dont exaggerate or state something which we all can see to be clearly untrue !! The police in the 26 counties do make mistakes and we can all criticise them when they do but i would not like to have to do their job and anytime i have had to call on them i have got good service. Give everyone their due Hipster !!

Hipster, what part of "having to do what they are ordered to " do you not understand, If they went against a court order they would be out of a job !!

well slasher what part of the blue flu do you not understand that my friend was against the consentuition (not sure how to spell it ) which the guards swore to uphold and why they also swore never to strike but yet they did when it suited them , there are dark days ahead and the guards will have to get their hands dirty , thats another reason they pushed them laws through our government has learned from the british divide and rule

Hipster, (1) The guards are not the government !!

(2) The guards cannot strike and the Blue Flu was all that was left open to them !! I actually think they were wrong but what else had they ?

(3) Things cannot get much worse as we appear to be at rock bottom and according to the days paper even the guards are getting out if they can !!
