Arrogance of GAA supporters.

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

now don't get me wrong, i absolutly love gaa, i love a day out to parnell or croker or even thurles on the odd occasion, but i just love sport. my first love is soccer. i just love it. rugby would be up there too. and badminton runs in the family. so does tennis. i just love sport. but maybe its just because i hear it alot, but a lot of gaa supporters seem to think there a cut above all the soccer/rugby fans. yes its true its OUR game. but soccer is the worlds game. rugby is new zealands and a bit of south dublin and munsters. ;) but i've been looking around some posts. i understand the amatuer aspect and the ridiculous amount of money soccer players get. i know its not fair. but every time theres a problem with gaa, soccer is somehow inadvertently blamed. (dublin crowd are late into a game, soccers fault, booing at a match, soccers fault, diving...ok, diving is ronaldos fault) every sport has its a bit of it. the michaels boys just loike, love rugby. some dubs are soccer heads at the games, i probably count as one sometimes. and maybe its because i live in ireland taht you just hear all the "gaa is so much better than soccer", and there is an argument for that, but you do gaa fans really need to look down on soccer/rugby fans? maybe its just me, and sorry if i waste your time with this loooooong post. i'd just like to know.

hope this is not a wum....anyway I don't look down on any sport but i don't get all the hysterical rubbish and non-stop babble that accompanies following the English Premier - and when some dope from Mayo (for example!) rings up Des Cahill and starts talking about "we" as in Chelsea or aston Villa.....well as the Yanks say, Count Me Out!

I wouldnt worry about it. Anyone ignorant enough to deny themselves the enjoyment of other sports should be left at it.

You definitely have a point, there's an unhealthy amount of snobbery among GAA supporters and that's a fact.

Yes there are people in our club who deliberately try to change the time of our games so as they will clash with soccer as they do not want us playing any other sports.

Baseball used to be my favorite sport. But after years of steroid scandals I view the sport with some scepticism. I enjoy watching hockey and basketball; especially college basketball. I will watch a few soccer matches. I like Celtic and attend a few MLS games here in the States. But I think GAA is more exciting and interesting than the other sports.

jos33 is spot on here. Certain other sports are no so dominated by money that the only objective at the start of the season is to finish in the top four in order to qualify for the Champions League. And then there is the ridiculous hype surrounding which over-paid, over-hyped player is moving clubs in order to get another exorbitant rise in their salary.
Lastly, i watched the Kerry-Galway QF at Croker last summer. I cheered my heart out for Galway and a fella a couple of rows in front of me cheered his heart out for Kerry. At the end of the contest, he turned and i just nodded at him, a case of saying: "Well done to your team, they were the better side on the day." Had this been at a Footie match, i'd have had my head kicked in.
The GAA is by no means perfect, but its a lot better than other sports.

I'd be the first to admit Im a terrible supporter during a game. Giving out about ref decisions, our own players decisions, encouragement to the point of losing my voice and at times near coming to blows with opposition suppporters! Theres something about championship football!

But at the end of the game theres always time for a handshake and a congratulations/comiserations and no hard feelings! Sure thats what its all about

Benjyy - spot on - I remember some of the matches for the lunatics I had rows with and wished a good luck to after thegame (I'm sure they thought I was a lunatic too). All part of it.

THe mindless transfer speculation of the summer get's on my nerves for the premiership. SUch a one going here etc etc.

Prem gets you through the Winter, but GAA from Jan-October (or whenever club championship ends !!!).

And as for the mindless hype and over analysis that follows rugby - please !

Each to their own - it's just not for me !!! I prefer my sport genuine (if flawed) and exciting.

I am not a snob at all !! Just proud of our wee organisation and its great tradition !! Nothing at all wrong with that or the fact that i think its head and shoulders better than the other sports you mention. Ours is from the cradle to the grave !!

dont think its typical of the GAA in particular, all sports have an arrogant element to them the same as in any other walk of life.

The Des Cahill bit and the guy ringing up talking about 'we' this and 'we' that when talking about West Bromwich Albion or the like really grates with me too. Some right eejits out there.
