Thank you Renard I have seen this writen somewhere before. It is quite obvious why the british would wish to ignore this. I could also be wrong here but I think she might well be the first democratically elected Female in the world.

It used to be called Pairc Sligeach but is now known as Markievicz Park after Markievicz Insurance bought the naming rights... just like Lansdowne Road/Aviva Stadium.

361346 Google her name COUNTICE MARKIEVICZ she was a mighty woman. A great Sligo and IRISH republican of HER time. Did you not learn any irish history in school at all? She was also first woman elected to house of parliment.

In my time we were taught no Irish history at all but we learned a great deal about the Angles Saxons York lancaster Tudors etc especially the reformation(how just it was) Cromwell but very little about his campaign in Ireland. And then of course we were taught all about William of orange omitting the bit about the treaty of limerick which was lost somewhere between limerick and London. Then we learned about Randolf Churchill lord Craigavon etc and how they saved us from the papists. So I can safely say that I was given no formal education in Irish history so you can imagine what avid readers my Generation were of the subersive books smuggled over the border under granny and mammys cushion on the rare visits over the BORDER back in the times you had to display the permit to visit that part of your own country on the windscreen of your austin 10. When at home you had to ask for the book from your ma if yoou wished to read it and return it to her so that she might hide in the event that the wrong person might see it in your house and thus your family would then be labeled as a breeding ground for rebels .

Its a fair assumption that the GAA will not name a groud after someone who is not

1. GAA legend
2. nationalist/Republican legend
3. Church legend

so would'nt bother doing the research I sure someone has done it already

Celtic park Breffnipark Wexford park athletic grounds drogheda park Aughrim park and shamrock park. And then there is Pairc Tailteainn O'moore park Pairc esler
Fraher field and semple stadium. The origens of these names are not neccessarily from the criteria you have suggested.

Ruanua - would you prefer if they named them after English monarchs, legends of cricket or Hindu gods? Strangely enough, some people take pride in their culture and traditions.

Redhot - unless you were educated somewhere other than Ireland, you have just done a huge disservice to the moniker of your home county.

To be honest I am not familiar with the possible reasons they were named. Perhaps it is a more local reason still fullfilling Ruanua's criteria

_______________

No

What post are you referring to I made the point that GAA grounds are commonly named after the criteria mentioned - I accept that this is not always the case as per Derrymans post. The purpose of my observation is that i am sure that the history books will show that sligo ground is not named after anybody that will offend the Irish tradition.

I did not say that there is anything wrong with the criteria used
I feel it is correct to honour our past heros(sporting or political) by naming GAA grounds, Railway stations, streets etc
I have pride in the GAA, irish language, Irish struggle for freedom and Irish music

So i cannot understand why you are coming on here raving about cricket and hindu gods unless you feel that anyone outside of Connemara is not entitled to have a passion for our country - Or are you referring to a different post

I took absolutely no offence from your post and my only aim was to point out that although to a very large extant your Criteria is correct there were some exceptions. I dont know how Festinog got his nose out of joint

No offence taken and I acknowledge your valid exceptions
As for the other poster I am also confused at the line of agression

Ruanua - my apologies.
maybe I read too much into the phrasing of your post. You'll forgive a Galwegian if he's a little touchy after the last 48 hrs!
But come to mention it Páirc Uí Krishna has a certain ring to it...
