I seen clips of Ring but Carey was the master..Craft,skill,speed-He could do things with a sliother that no other hurler could or can do..the nearst i have seen was John Troy of Offaly but Carey had everything. fathermurphy (Wexford) - Posts: 330 - 22/07/2009 20:11:52 357442 Link 0 |

Being from wexford you'll know all about Christy Ring next year. He was the greatest but the competition sure aint. SuperCats (Kilkenny) - Posts: 101 - 22/07/2009 21:15:08 357512 Link 0 |
the old man, who has seen most of the greats says Ring. DJ was a close second though (see QF vs Galway for proof) that shows a special hurler in an average team. lostcat (Dublin) - Posts: 49 - 22/07/2009 21:15:52 357513 Link 0 |
Ciaran or DJ? bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4655 - 22/07/2009 21:39:11 357535 Link 0 |
Who said either was the greatest? What about Mick Mackey? Shefflin and Joe Canning and a few others may finish better when they are all done with the game. It's a strange question as Ring and DJ are from two different eras and it's impossible to know for sure. Both are legends of the game in my opinion. pwalsh67 (Galway) - Posts: 100 - 22/07/2009 21:50:29 357547 Link 0 |

On only the fifth reply to the thread, Joe Canning was somehow mentioned and as usual it is the Galway posters trying to build him up into something he isn't. The weight of expectation on his shoulders must be huge, no wonder he is struggling a bit. Loyal2TheRoyal (Meath) - Posts: 4522 - 22/07/2009 22:39:53 357653 Link 0 |
Supercat-You seem very bitter towards wexford,i think its time to forget 2004 the way we hit ye where it hurts in the last puck of the game, was better than any three in a row... fathermurphy (Wexford) - Posts: 330 - 22/07/2009 22:59:59 357686 Link 0 |
Loyal you are amazing. You must have some search engine that throws up a thread everytime Joe Cannings name is mentioned and you are in like a flash having a go. I suspect that its some kind of wind up you are on and as I'm not from Galway it doesn't particularly bother me. What are you going to say when the guy has a stormer and bangs in a few goals its bound to happen soon. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 22/07/2009 23:08:18 357697 Link 0 |

Shefflin is a mile ahead of Carey. Carey often went missing when needed. Held scoreless in 2 A1 finals. Hardly the record of a great. Shefflin never lets his team down. gaillimh73 (Galway) - Posts: 669 - 22/07/2009 23:51:34 357746 Link 0 |
gaillimh73 County: Galway Posts: 102 357746 Shefflin is a mile ahead of Carey. Carey often went missing when needed. Held scoreless in 2 A1 finals. Hardly the record of a great. Shefflin never lets his team down. But when Joe Canning is held scoreless, most games these days, he is being "creative". What a load of rubbish. DJ was the best I saw, better than Jimmy Doyle, Eddie Keher and the rest. Shefflin looked to have it all until his "injury" against Clare in 2004. And Shefflin is great at rallying the side. But when you needed a goal, DJ was the man. Ring was the first "professional" hurler, nothing else mattered in his life. His impact will never be surpassed, so I think we have to admit that Ring was the "greatest" whatever that really means. patrique (Antrim) - Posts: 13709 - 23/07/2009 00:21:55 357776 Link 0 |
fathermurphy, you deserve the "rack" for reopening this old chestnut! It's a stupid thread. What age were you, or most keyboard poster's, when Ringy was playing club & county. Carey has the advantage of modern & recent TV footage to show how special he was. Ringy, only snippet's of archival coverage. Both men gifted hurler's. At 55 years of age, I had the pleasure of seeing Ringy play for the Glen in county championship games. One word....awesome! Really hate these stupid threads of "who was better". Michael Jackson could not lace the boots of Elvis Presley. That's one for you Mort!!!!!! John Lennon was better than both of them! Jimmy Doyle, Mick Mackey, Christy Ring are probably the 3 greatest hurlers of all time. as all i have ever seen is short video clips i cant comment on their brilliance. It is very hard to compare era's but i would say that DJ would fit in well with that company. For me he would rank well ahead of Shefflin. Shefflin is an excellent inter-county forward. DJ was a genius. Only a handful of players can be considered truly great. Personally i never saw the brilliance in Brian Whelehan. Again an excellent player but not great. For me he is right there with Ciaran Carey, Seanie McMahon & Brian Lohan as truly outstanding players at their time but not legends.
