RTÉ Sport can confirm that Derry's James Conway has been handed a 48-week ban by the Derry County Board.

The hearings committee of the Derry County Board imposed the suspension last night, after Conway gave his version of an off-the-ball incident during a match for his club, Ballinderry, in which Kilrea's James Kielt suffered a fractured jaw.

Conway had originally been given an eight-week ban, which was subsequently lifted as the referee had not witnessed the alleged strike on Kielt, and Ballinderry were unable to identify the player responsible.

Two Ballinderry officials had already been handed six-month suspensions arising from the whole affair, while the club has been banned from all adult competions for a period of three months following appeal.

This means that the reigning Derry champions will not be able to defend their title.

Well lads 48 weeks is a big ban and ballinderry cant defend there title .

have to disagree with your there Dell unless you know the full circumstances it seems a very harsh sentence on Ballinderry club, the player involved got a lengthy ban but i dont agree with Ballinderry being expelled from this year's Championship totally unfair in my eyes and extremely harsh.... where's it all going to end?

To be fair all they ballinderry had to do was name the player the first time they where asked who done it and if they refused so they deserve the ban and would not have got it if they would have named the player.

well i'l put it to you like this Dell, with the way our modern society is the ould American culture of $$$ has taken over and any incident either on and off the field of play are potentially the subject of Court proceedings, its how it is these days, so if Ballinderry had of named him technically the Chairman and Secretary were acting as judge & jury on the case even though every dog on the street knew who it was! shocking way to handle business and you have to look at all these aspects nowadays unfortunately and thats why i think the punishment on the Ballinderry club itself were extremely harsh in my eyes.

would you not agree?

Dell your info is wrong, B'derry are back in the league and championship, I hear they lose 4 league points and have to play all their games away.

Also, people you are misunderstanding the 48 weeks sentencing, the reason for this is because he wouldn't come forward at the time and this lead to the carry on of the past few weeks, it wasn't the actual strike he was banned for 48 weeks it was his failure to come forwards therefore witholding information.

Also, 48 weeks is not the sentencing by Derry it is the sentencing from the Ulster Council.

Conway banned for a year

Derry's James Conway
22 July 2009

Derry midfielder James Conway has been hit with a whopping 48-week suspension by the Derry county board.

Conway received the ban after he appeared before the Derry Hearings Committee last night to give his version of an off-the-ball incident that occurred during a club match between his club Ballinderry and Kilrea last month, and left his county colleague James Kielt with a broken jaw.

Conway had originally been given an eight-week ban, which was subsequently quashed as the referee had not witnessed the alleged strike on Kielt, and Ballinderry were unable to identify the player responsible.

Two Ballinderry officials had already been handed six-month suspensions for their refusal to cooperate with the county board's investigation, while the club has been banned from all adult competitions for three months following appeal.

This means that the Shamrocks will not be able to defend their Derry SFC title, while Conway won't be eligible to line out for his club or county for most of next year.

How does this work again...the CCC hear the case first, then the CHC, next comes the CAC and then there's the DRA ? Or is it not as straightforward ?
