Loyal2TheRoyal County: Meath Posts: 2331 356073 Well said CodyisGod. For me Canning can be put in the same bracket as Aisake O'Hailpin or Michael Webster with the added addition that he is a dead ball specalist who never misses a free from inside 80 yards. The Galway supporters think he is their saviour and such a weight of expectation on his shoulders isn't really fair either. Ah cum on now loyal, you're jst a bit bitter the way sooo many people are against yeh and you've still yet to admit that Joe is great hurler... Lik what's your problem, jealousy? throw_it_over (Galway) - Posts: 769 - 21/07/2009 23:39:30 356197 Link 0 |
Truely magnificent hurler. Serious hurling brain, vision and turn of speed. The real deal without any doubt Passer_By (Carlow) - Posts: 537 - 22/07/2009 00:01:03 356240 Link 0 |

One more thing: you can't measure what Cannings value to Galway is by just sitting there reading the paper the next day to see what he scored. He CREATES scores for others due to his greatness. Some things can't be found in a newspaper. He does a LOT more than just score. pwalsh67 (Galway) - Posts: 100 - 22/07/2009 00:19:59 356281 Link 0 |

He is under rated! Easy to be a great player (Shelflin, Brennan etc) when you have great players around you capable of providing you with reasonable support play and timely passes. This lad has to do it all on his own alot of the time. As for not contributing from play - he is man marked the whole time. Like other posters have siad the reason for this is that he is the biggest threat to any defence. It this was Kilkenny they can't afford to man mark one man because there are 5 others capable of running havoc. If Canning was on the Kilkenny team he would out shine every other player. Over - rated? Are you serious? Is there any team in the country that wouldn't take him? Hurlings greatest prospect at the moment, if only he was a Limerick man! I am sorry Loyal i have to disagree with you. Having been lucky enough to see Joe play in the flesh some 10 times or so, i can honestly say there is at least 1 piece of genius he has produced in every single game. I remember in particular u-21 sf in 2006 against kk joe started the game on the bench, was brought on after about 15 mins and on his own immeaditely brought galway into the game as a 17 year old. Neither Donnacha Cody or John Dalton could handle him. Correct me if im wrong wasnt it joe who picked up the ball on his own 21 in Ennis and delivered a 100 yard clearence leadin to a Niall Healy goal? Wasnt it Joe who chased Cadogan half the length of the pitch last sat. got the ball off him took a huge hit still had the presece of mind to pass it to a team mate. Both plays took place in injury time with both games won. I could go on...! The point i am making is Joe is much more then a finisher. I will be in Thurles on Sunday to see Joe again as a neutrul, as he is real gem worth the entrance fee alone. Jgc81 (Meath) - Posts: 195 - 22/07/2009 10:18:49 356497 Link 0 |
For me Joe cannot be put in a bracket with anyone else because there is no-one near him at his age, in his position. Maybe against Cork & against Clare he didnt score enough from play but he did alot more that he wouldnt have done last year. He's improving all the time, he knows his weaknesses and he will improve on them and like any youngster he is not playing at his best yet. Give him time let him prove the doubters wrong. tribes4liam09 (Galway) - Posts: 147 - 22/07/2009 10:31:10 356521 Link 0 |
joe in the best player in the country even at such a young age. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4649 - 22/07/2009 10:41:51 356530 Link 0 |
Nobody is denying that Joe can go on to be a great, but it's absolutely undeniable that he has not done enough at Inter County level so far to justify the media frenzy surrounding him. He's excellent from placed balls but from play he's been average at best in the 7 games I've pointed out. And don't give me this bull about working hard, no top inter county player shy's away from hard work, it's a minimum requirement. Joe is living on a reputation that he does not deserve on his performances so far. For instance, Noel McGrath from Tipp has been superb in every game this year, is a year younger than Joe, yet nobody's mentioning him in terms of being the best player in the country. Why not? Because he doesn't take frees? His performances so far this year, in every game, have been far more impressive than JC. Here is truly a player who is delivering on his promise. Apart from frees, the same cannot be said for Joe. That's a fact. CodyisGod (Kilkenny) - Posts: 20 - 22/07/2009 11:10:19 356570 Link 0 |
I think the "no look" pass to Hayes for the first goal in last years Club Final sums him up. A great player and a great team player. The Face (Monaghan) - Posts: 890 - 22/07/2009 11:12:41 356573 Link 0 |
He is the best young hurler in the country by a mile, and the best young talent to come along for many years. So let's leave it at that. Overrated / underrated is all subjective. aidangalway (Galway) - Posts: 648 - 22/07/2009 11:19:46 356583 Link 0 |
its a bit unfair to compare him to shefflin, hes only in his 2 nd year at inter county level, and shefflin has better players around him,but he is excellent from placed balls and sideline cuts,he would walk onto any other inter county team, galway need him hurling needs him too.best of luck to him!!! arabrebel (Cork) - Posts: 42 - 22/07/2009 11:33:33 356604 Link 0 |
FACT: just the FACT that people are comparing Joe Canning to Shefflin or DJ makes the point FOR me. Canning is a special player. Case closed. pwalsh67 (Galway) - Posts: 100 - 22/07/2009 12:34:37 356705 Link 0 |

Ya he is overrated by a mile! Shouldn't be playing intercounty hurling, would be more suited to Junior C hurling in Galway!! Go back to sleep all of you Hurlers On Ditches if you think he is over-rated. You know nothing about hurling if you think that. Dont forget he turned it on against Ballyhale Shamrocks a little earlier this year too. There was definitley a couple of goals and points from play that day. Think he put a sideline cut clean over the bar as well. Lads on here quoting all sorts of mickey mouse club matches and statistics. That was one day to shine and he stood up no bother Passer_By (Carlow) - Posts: 537 - 22/07/2009 13:51:07 356836 Link 0 |
