Joe Canning is a special hurler. A real rarity. He makes everyone around him much better as he takes alot of the defence with him. There are people here that only look at the stat sheets to judge Canning and that's a sign that they just don't understand the game at all. Canning's real strongpoint is his passing and setting others up for scores. Please WAKE UP and acknowledge this special YOUNG player!!!

If he was sorrounded by all the KK or Tipp talent he would score 4 goals every game!!!

Still going on about the 2-12 he got against Cork last year? And then have the audicity to claim he's "the ultimate hurling man"? Ha. When you come down off whatever cloud you're living on, explain this:

In Canning's last 200 minutes of hurling, he has only scored 0-1 from play and been virtually anonymous from open play, he has scored every free/65 he's taken along with the odd sideline cut and he deserves credit for his consistency from placed balls but other than that, he has been below average.

Is the above true or false?

His vision is good, his handpassing is good, but like his scoring from play, he hasn't done a lot of either in his last three games.

Its not about what he does/doesnt score from play. His vision, his strength, the selfless work he puts in back the field for his team. The punishment he takes to win the ball to set up the scores for his teamates is extraordinary, his defensive play is excellent.Typical of this country as soon as someone looks talented take every opportunity possible to run him down.

I cannot understand how anybody can still ask whether Joe Canning is overrated. You cannot overrate him. He is simply awesome,
something like you could say 50 years ago that Christy Ring was awesome. Players like that do not appear in every generation.
But Galway might pay the price for his brilliance. I believe that potentially their players are not far behind the Kilkenny players, man for man,
but living in Joe's shadow, they just may not have the space to develop their full potential...he does so much. Sounds strange but it might
be true.

quit banging that particular drum Loyal2TheRoyal. By your own admission you've never been to a match he's played in. You're not qualified to comment.

Everywhere Joe Canning has played he has won and he's the best player on every team he has played on. He makes everyone around him better!

Please read Sean Og's piece on the cover of this site!

Please stop looking for STAT sheets to do your thinking FOR you. Some things don't show up on STAT sheets!

Tell Portumna, and Ballyhale, and Gort, and all the other Clubs he has hammered, and also the minors and under 21s, etc that he is overrated. They will laugh in your face like I'm doing.

Loyal2theroyal started a thread about this a while ago and was laughed off the page and rightly so. Joe Canning once again produced the goodslast night. He was involved in most of Galways scores. The goal came from him. He rolled up his sleeves and did a lot of donkey work. Was in his own defence in the last few minutes winning ball taking a hit and getting the pass away. Atrocious judgement Loyal is forgiveable. Getting your facts wrong is not. Did he not score a goal from play against Kilkenny. Now I'm going to take my own advice and ignore totally your ridiculous nonsense.

Well Greengrass, if you read my comment again, I said 200 minutes, not 210 minutes so I'm not sure if I should forgive you of your ridiculous nonsense. I love the way people keep going on about how we won a ball in his own first and then claim he's the best ever. You would think nobody had ever won a ball before.....

L2R:

Seriously what do you have against Joe Canning? Has he not won everywhere he's been? Has he not gotten accolades from everyone that plays against him? Why single HIM out? Look at his history in depth and please rethink about it.

Joe Canning is a highly talented hurler.

The media will over hype him, but Joe is not over rated.

I've nothing against Joe, like most, I enjoy watching him play - along with all other county hurlers. But just look at the posts on this thread from Galway posters worshipping him, ye lot have the player hyped up so much, then when someone says something negative, you all say I know nothing about hurling. The simple fact of the matter is Joe has scored 0-1 in his last 200 minutes of hurling. In any other players' circumstances, it would be perfectly normal to start a thread asking whether or not they are over-rated but not Prince Joe? Why?

So far, he has played one very good game at senior level and a lot of average ones. Maybe he's done good things for LIT, for Portumna for the Galway Under 21s, but all those things can't justify some of the things being said on here. He's nowhere near as good as Henry Sheflin, there is no comparing the two of them. Even people comparing him to arguably the greatest hurler ever, Christy Ring? How can you justify that?

How can you justify that? By going and watching him play. Treat yourself, in years to come you'll be able to be tell your grandkids you saw one of the games greatest in the flesh

Same reaction on this thread that there was to your own one Loyal. The posts by the way are coming in from all over the country not just Galway and once again you and your ridiculous rubbish are being laughed off the pages and rightly so. Could you please answer the question how many times have you seen Joe play in the flesh? I know I said I'd ignore you but God knows I need a good laugh.

I see what I need to see on the television. How many of Christy Ring's matches were the Galway posters comparing him to Joe at?

Conor, I didn't need to be in Verbier in Switzerland today to see that Alberto Contador was the best cyclist in the world, I didn't need to be at Epsom to see that Sea The Stars is the best 3yo colt in Europe. Saying that because I don't go see Joe play is so lame, it could almost be taken as a throwing in of the white flag by his defenders.

Based on his last three games, is Joe over-rated? Yes big time. I'll say it again, 0-1 from play in his last 200 minutes of hurling tells its own story. Galway posters are seriously mis-informed when it comes to their star forward.

If you want to laugh at my posts because I question the talent of one your heroes, then I pity you. His last three games have proven just where Joe is in the hurling world. Ger Loughnane wasn't laughing when he said Joe was suffering from "second season syndrome" eight days ago. I have never seen Joe play in the flesh, I fail to see what has that got to do with anything? If you use it as an excuse, then I'll just take it that you have accepted defeat. Such a lame argument.
