Joe Canning. Is he overrated?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

No one can dispute that without Joe Canning Galway would have not have won yesterday. His ability to score from frees/sidelines all around the pitch is nothing short of astonishing but having watched him in three matches this year he contributes virtually nothing in general play.

That's rubbish Duggie. He was involved in an awful lot of Galways scores. He was taken out to the middle of the field where he did a lot of hard work. Who by the way was the man who in the seventy second minute who picked up the ball in his own defence and shipped a massive hit yet still managed to get the pass away? Joe Canning. He is already one of the greats of the modern game. This topic has already been done to death on these pages. Instead of talking about the man go and watch him and enjoy his play.

Ridiculous!! The guy is the best player in the country. Galway are no where near as good man for man as Kilkenny or Tipp but with Joe they have a chance. His passing and vision are top class and not many players would have scored those frees in the 1st half from well inside his own half.

well i thought he was magnificent yesterday, dropped back to dig out the defence yesterday in the 2nd half and ensured the 7 point margin was what it was! Without a doubt, not one bit overrated in my opinion! Galway area team on the rise, and they play each other into the game well, they are far from a one man show, but Canning gives them a real edge!

Canning was class last night worked in all areas of the pitch and his sideline cut was brillaint great to have been there to see it.
Could be hurler of the year if Galway get to the semi finals.

curious to see galway move their most profilic scoring forward out the field - had it anything to do with the fact he was well held in at FF against clare?

Is he over-rated? Yes!

1-1 from play in his last three games, held by JJ Delaney, held by James McInerney, poor against Cork and two goal chances spurned that any half decent full-forward would have buried. I believe most post posters on here don't actually watch hurling matches anymore, they just type what they read in the papers. When I see comments like "should get player of the year", it makes me wonder why I'm even bother replying. Honest to God, have you ever read anything as silly? What should he get hurler of the year for? A sideline cut? Because he picked a break in his half-back line when he was playing a wing-forward? How could you give hurler of the year to Canning ahead of Andy Smith or Aonghus Callinan, I don't know, never mind Mullane, Fogarty, McCrabbe, Noel McGrath, JJ.

Would like to expand on that there, son. Your reasoning has blown me away, why bother even replying to the thread?

In Canning's last 200 minutes of hurling, he has only scored 0-1 from play and been virtually anonymous from open play, he has scored every free/65 he's taken along with the odd sideline cut and he deserves credit for his consistency from placed balls but other than that, he has been below average.

Is the above true or false?

If people start going on about he picked up a break in the second half of a game, then it will just show you how over-rated he is!!!!

Bit harsh with the 2 goal scoring chances spurned somment. As they said in the times Cadogan was hiding him like he was at a rodeo. Brilliant shot and pure reaction save. I doubt Donal Og saw the ball. Anyone who saw the portumna v ballyhale game earlier this year will agree with him as selection as hurler of the year. He is amazing. Best player i have ever seen in the flesh.
