Wfkerry, never mind the great Mikey Sheehy !! Many of them would not lace the boots of one John Egan, now there is a man who knew where the posts were !!

Cant believe that youse wouldnt include "the king"
Realise that some of you are teens/20,s but surely youve seen highlights of the 1984 ulster final which IMO is the greatest ever single game display of brillance
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'The King' spent his best years in America, so he couldn't be regarded as one of the top 5 greatest footballers of all time. Top 5 talents yes, for sure, but so much of the talent was unfulfilled. Even that day against Armagh he was well past his best, but the brilliance was still there. Shame we never saw just how good he could have been over several years.

Fair enough Thomas clarke but if this was a soccer thread you could say the same on Georgie Best ???

I'm only young but in my time (and in no particular order)

1.Kieran McGeeney
2.Seamus Moynihan
3.Peter Canavan
4.Mickey Linden
5.Graham Geraghty

1. Maurice Fizgerald
2. Peter Canavan
3. Matt Connor
4. Mick O connell
5. Trevor Giles

No particular order-very hard to judge as different eras had different styles. Could argue the case of another 20 players (Tomas, Dara O Se, Sheehy, Cavanagh, Dooher, Spillane plus loads i'm forgetting)

The 5 that stand out most from those I've seen:
Ciaran McDonald (disgraceful how he's being treated right now in Mayo, they should be sending him baskets of fruit begging him to play)
Maurice Fitzgerald
Matty Forde
Peter Canavan
Declan Browne

OK - apologies, this is going to ramble a bit but anyway:- Sean Cavanagh - Absolutely Fantastic Canavan - Fantastic Joyce - Fantastic Donellan - Even better I think maybe Gooch - Fantastic Daragh & Tomas - Fantastic Teddy McCarthy - incredible Martin O'Connell - just as incredible as McCarthy. The best for years. McGeeney - Inspirational McDonald - Brilliant at his best Maurice Fitz - No need to comment Tohill - Fantatsic Moynihan - A legend Gerraghty - Fantastic McConville - Deadly Stephen O'Neill - Still Brilliant I'm sure there are plenty of others and It's so hard to pick. It's almost pointless and a shame to pick but for me the best FOOTBALLERS of this lot would be in no particular order. Cavanagh Donellan Tomas O'Se Maurice Fitz Before that:- Bobby Doyle Matt Connor Jimmy Barry Jacko Pat Spillane - one of the best ever as much as he annoys the hell out of me Mikey Sheehy Brian Mullins Ogie Moran The Bomber John Egan John O'Keefe Kevin Moran And historically before that none of whom I've seen but you have to bow to our older fans knowledge aswell and take that into account in the future. Purcell O'Neill Murphy Colleran Heffernan O'Connell McKeever Langan Dan O'Keefe My point is it's virtually impossible but if I had to this would be the top 5 of all time that i have seen. Pat Spillane Sean Cavanagh Jack O'Shea Maurice Fitzgerald Michael Donellan Tomas O'Se Matt Connor That's 7 i'm afraid. Sorry.

Excellent choice.

When I was 14 I would have said Andy McCailin, Aidan Hamill, Paddy Doherty, Charlie Gallagher and Sean O'Neill.

Good man Adam - and all great players too - and a defender there unlike most other selections! If I was looking at it over the last 10 years or so I would probably have most of them as well - with maybe Graham Geraghty instead of Peter the great.

one thing you have to take into account is that football has changed and the modern game is of a complete different class compared to about 15+ so i dont see why anybody would pick players who are beyond that time frame.

If Matt Connor isnt in your top 5

ya no nothing bout ftball

Well said totalftballer. He was a true footballing artist. His performance in the 1980 semi-final against Kerry was phenomenal - he scored 2-9 against the greatest team ever when they were at their peak.

granted i have only been attending matches sinc 85 but these are mine

1. Graham Geraghty (may seem biased but ask any player who has played against meath when he was playing and they always were scared of him)
2. Anthony Tohill ( the man had some reach on him
3 Maurice fitz
4. Cormac McAnallen (he could have done so much)
5. Peter Canavan
6. Pauric joyce
7. Brian Stafford (the best free taker albeit manufactured that ever took a free)
