In recent times I'd say Maurice Fitz and Colin Corkery. At the minute Sheehan is very good, Cian Ward as well. Paddy Cunningham from my own county deserves a mention. Before him we had Kevin Madden, also very reliable. SW_Gael (Antrim) - Posts: 55 - 15/07/2009 11:39:00 346717 Link 0 |
Maurice Fitzgerald Kerry by far the best in last ten years followed by Colm Corkery of Cork and in Mayo would have been Maurice Sheridan & Ciaran Mc Donald on his day. boxer (Mayo) - Posts: 29 - 15/07/2009 11:53:57 346731 Link 0 |

With both RTE and TV3 Delving further into stats with every season it's amazing that they haven't broken down the success rate of all the free takers over the course of the season, like they do in Rugby. Peter Parker (Galway) - Posts: 14 - 15/07/2009 12:49:02 346812 Link 0 |

Maurice Fitz - 2 reasons. I was at a Clare-Kerry Munster final in Limerick, Kerry had won a free at the hardest possible angle-on the 13m line in the right-hand corner. Maurice saunters over and puts the ball down. He then notices the ref had been caught up with looking at an injury so strides up and takes the free with his left (not his weaker side but his less brilliant side!) and misses by a good bit knowing full well he'll have to retake. Sure enough he did and then proceeds to split the posts with the "official" effort - genius and cute so and so all wrapped into one. As a neutral, I was at the Kerry-Dublin game in Thurles when he scored THAT point. My privilege was to be exactly behind him, three rows from the sideline wire, when he struck the ball. Now for those who were there or saw it on telly, it was incredible, the view I was so lucky to get left me speechless. I'm a hurling fan but Maurice Fitzgerald was the player who was most capable of elevating football to an art form. barrnasraide (Carlow) - Posts: 49 - 15/07/2009 13:17:17 346853 Link 1 |
