A question that often pops up is does anyone have the lyrics to Kerry's 5 in a row song? I know a line of it:

They came from the north, south, east and west,
but to MickO's men they were second best...............

Forgive 3inarow08 did you not pen a wee tune last year in preparation for Kerry's ill fated 3 in a row? regards Willie ,I hope Stars injury isn't as bad as it looked

The Wild Swans - Dancing at the Crossroad.

The best GAA song ever by the proverbial Irish mile.

on Hill 16, August 1993, Mayo V Cork, sung by fifteen thousand rebel fans, never forget it. Cork thrashed mayo by twenty points.

" Mayo....May...yooo....Mayo come and they wanna go home"

You would have to give it to Dancing at the Crossroads it made number 1 for four weeks in 96. Pity we have no teams to go with it.

51 longago that song was by Doc Carroll of famous "Old Man Trouble" and the Royal blues showband. We will the Sam McGuire and we will Fly her into knock - maybe it will happen this year

In fairness you can't beat the Dubs for that.

One of the few counties to have songs about their players and team as opposed to the county itself. One thing I actually like about the Dubs.

To the tune of "come out ye black and tans"

Come on you Donegal
we'll support you one and all
From Mailn Head to Bundo-o-ran
Well raise a last hurr-a
From the border to Ardara
When we bring the Sam Maguire up from dublan

GAA songs are always rubbish

Can't agree at all. Here is a great song about a great hurler - the immortal Nicky Rackard. To hear Martin Codd sing it would make the hairs stand up on the back of your head:

Cuhulainn's Son
Tom Williams

The challenge of an ancient game
Brought glory, glory to your name
Though March winds blew the crowds still came
To watch you gentle hero.
In life's long march you made us proud
And many a voice from out the crowd
Called out your name aloud, aloud
An echo still resounding.

And Blackstairs men who saw you then
Still speak of you in awe,
On Carman's green where you had been
They tell of what they saw,
We watched you on September fields
And lightning was the drive
You were the one, Cuchulainn's son in 1955.

The hand that held the stick of ash,
And the man who led with style and dash,
Oh! Carrigtwohill once felt the crash
And Bennettsbridge and Thurles.
And when in later life you beat
The devil on that lonely street
You showed us how to take defeat
With dignity and courage.

The last parade was sad and slow
The last oration spoken low
And as, on green fields long ago
The Diamond stood beside you
Old friends they flanked you side by side
And the tears they shed were tears of pride
An ash tree toppled when you died
And scattered seeds at random.

Here's the Christy Ring song mentioned above. It's called "A Song for Christy Ring" and was written by Kerry man Bryan MacMahon to the air of "Skibereen".

Come gather round me boys tonight and raise your glasses high,
Come Rockies, Barrs and Rovers stars, let welcome hit the sky,
Let bonfires blaze and heroes praise, let Shannon echoes fling,
For homeward bound with hurling crown comes gallant Christy Ring.

Come you hurlers from the Nore, you lads from Corrib's side,
From Garryowen both gay and bold with Tipp's own men beside,
You may have hurlers straight and tall who can a caman swing
But whose the name can play the game with Cork's own Christy Ring.

When we were young we read in school how in the days of old,
The young Setanta showed his worth with shield and spear of gold,
As hurling hard on royal sward he'd hurling heroes fling,
My soul today, he'd yield the sway if he met Christy Ring.

A healh to faithful Wexford boys, to the Rackards and their team,
Should Cork surrender Ireland's crown may victory on them gleam,
John Kelly's name we hold in fame - of '98 we sing,
But Slaney's plan must find a man to equal Christy Ring.

How oft I've watched him from the Hill move here and there in grace,
In Cork, Killarney, Thurles town or by the Shannon's race,
"Now Cork is bet; the hay is saved!" the Tipp folk wildly sing-
Don't speak too soon, my sweet garsun, for here comes Christy Ring.

When age has claimed this warrior brave, and ended is the fight,
And o'er the hearth he hangs at last both stick and trophies bright,
Come counties all both great and small who boast a hurling King,
There's none tonight can hold candlelight to Cork's own Christy Ring.

"'Til we cross the bridge in Lifford with the Sam Maguire Cup"

Fred,

It's an awful pity nobody told Margo that the planned route home was on the train to Sligo and up to Bundoran (not for one minute would I be cynical enough to suggest that the then Manager had any reason to prefer that route than the one suggested by Margo in her wonderful song !!) I always thoughts that was a cunning move but I suppose the important thing was winning it - no matter how they got it home. (before someone makes that obvious point)

I have posted this before, tis my own little ditty about mayo called "The Most Distressful County" to the tune of The Saw Doctors song 'The Green and Red of Mayo' Hope ye like it! Indeed one of the Kerry lads on here liked it so much he added his own verse to include lines about blaming misfortunes on a tinkers curse! Indeed the mayo lads liked it too and I also added a song on my own county just to start the retaliation off for them (Dublin lads wear their heart on their sleeve after all!)! Here goes:

"The Most Distressful County".....(by Snufalufagus)

"Oh the Green and Red of Mayo, weighs heavy on my heart,
Oh the Green and Red of Mayo, should just give up from the start,
Tis the most distressful county, that ever yet was seen,
They should ban all men and women from wearing red and green!....the red and green oohh!"

"Oh the Green and Red of Mayo, all born with two left feet,
Oh the Green and Red of Mayo, their a handy team to beat,
Oh they put their faith in false Gods, bleached hair and fake tan,
In the Tommy Murphy next year, they'll do the best they can!....the best they can oohh!"

Regards,

Snufalufagus....Laochra Gael
