Best dual player ever?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Barry Cullinane of Turloughmore Galway won both U21 All Irelands in 2005. Playing centre field for the footballers and centre back for the hurlers. Altough I dont rate him as a hurler and only slightly better as a fooballer. Alan Kierns is a fine example of the theory that a good hurler can make a good footballer. Red Barry also played rugby for Lenister and Ireland as well as holding the Irish schools record in the pole vault.

Would Jimmy Barry Murphy have brought Antrim to a hurling final and two football semi-finals? To reach those semis Antrim had to beat the Cavan 1946-1952 team, who only lost 4 games, twice. Possibly the finest football team ever.

So I would have to say Kevin Armstrong is without doubt your man.

He was a far better footballer than JBM or Lynch or any of the other dual stars, arguably the best ever to come out of Ulster, and he won a place on the hurling team of the millennium for non all Ireland winners.

Those facts make him hard to oppose.

Paddy Kehoe of Gusserane and Wexford. One of Wexford's most decorated players who played in forties and fifties. 4 County senior football medals, 1 Leinster Football medal, 2 All Ireland hurling medals and numerous other awards. Currently not in best of health. Best wishes Paddy.

The late great jack lynch has to be the greatest dual player of them all. 7 all irelands in a row if I'm not mistaken 6 for hurling and 1 for football. Within my own county there are so many. Brian mcgilligan sean
Marty lockhart henry Downey geoffey mcgonigle the list goes on and on in Derry, but the best of the lot had to have been Ciaran mckeever. The problem in this county is that a good dual player will always pick football over hurling as they have more chance of success in football. The same could be said of dual players from the likes of tipp, Limerick or them places except they will pick hurling over the football, I think the days of being a competetive intercounty dual player is sadly over

Look at the current Dublin squad. Shane Ryan, David Henry, Conal Keaney would get on just about any hurling team. Vinny Murphy was a very good hurler also. Eric Millar could have made it at football but chose Rugby........

Babs Keating would be the best from Tipperary. He was a much better footballer than Brendan Cummins. Declan Browne, as well as being a brilliant footballer was also a fine hurler, but never really got a fair chance from the Tipperary hurling selectors or manager.

If he had been born in Derry, like the McGurks, McGilligan, Downey's, McKeever and Geoffrey, would he have won 6 in a row as it was, 1941-44 hurling, 45 football, 46 hurling?

I doubt it.

Lynch was a great hurler, fair footballer but we cannot measure in medals.

Geoffrey McGonagle for pure ability. Great hands, great feet, strong as a lorry full of charolais bulls, old school dude who just loved to play ball. Zero all-Irelands, but nonetheless a pure artist whose enthusiasm and natural skills were a pleasure to watch. Cult hero in Derry, he might have been a multiple All-Star in both codes if he had lost a stone or two, but then he wouldn't have been Big Geoffrey, whose enjoyment we all shared
