Best dual player ever?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Dual inter-county players seem to be a dying breed but they used to be fairly common. Who was the greatest? One obvious contender is Jimmy-Barry Murphy. The last high-profile dual player I can recall was Alan Kerins.

Brian Murphy of Cork !! Great at hurling and football and a quiet unassuming gentleman as well. Star of the early '70's.

To be fair Alain Keirns wasnt much of a footballer, brilliant hurler mind. Never kicked a ball in his life till he was in Trinity of all places!

Unfortunately its a dying thing but Limerick always seem to have a few. Stephen Lucey and Riordan generaly play to a good level in both codes. It's hard to say who was the greatest. Barry Murphy will always spring to mind, if he'd been born ithough n say Westmeath his talents would never of been seen by the masses. Our own Johnny Nevin of Carlow was an immaculate footballer and excellent hurler too but most people would never have seen him play.

Hats off anyhow to all dual players. Its something which should be accommodated and encouraged by all inter county trainers

Undoubtedly Jimmy Barry-Murphy was the best. Top class in both codes. Credit to Teddy McCarthy aswell, it will be a long time before anyone matches his achievement of winning both in the same year (though Alan Kerins came close). JBM was a class ahead of Teddy though.

Passer_by, Alan Kerins actually isn't a bad footballer at all. He started all of Galway games in 2001 up to the final, but only came on as a sub that day. He also played on the Salthill team that won the All-Ireland club title in 2006. Not a natural footballer as such, but his pace, athleticism and tremendous workrate made him a valuable player to have around.

i always thought the same but saw him one day and he is no more the 5 ft 8"

Tom Kenny is also a savage footballer, would be a hugh asset to the Cork footballers if ye ever decided to play for them.
