With another poor season at county level eyes turning now to league action before the championship.... Any thoughts on Div 1 fixtures this weekend or any of the league finals coming up Div 2 Carrigallen v Dromahair, Div 3 Ballinaglera v Glencar/Manor and Div 4 Kiltubrid v Leitrim Gaels???

They don't have the quality but gave Aughavas a good game in the championship. Do you think they ever stand a chance of coming out of Junior?.

Why is there a Shield A playoff this weekend? The three previous matches have not been played because of walkovers. Now, there are two playoffs to sort out who gets into the final???? What is the point?? Players could'nt care less about the Shield!! The whole point of the Shield was that it would give ordinary players i.e. non-county players the chance to continue playing while the league was being upheld because nobody was willing to play without county players. It gave structured games to managers instead of challenges. If they cannot play shield during the inter-county championship then they should just ignore it once Leitrim are knocked out. They are simply fulfilling fixtures for the sake of completing games when competitions like the shield, the hurling and the u-21 should be played far earlier in the year. Any Bor/SOH/Drom opinions?

Agreed, The shield was introduced to give players games when the County is active and that's when it should be played. Although Bor or SOH might be glad of the challenge seeing as they have vital league matches left to play, I can't see how Dromahair could be motivated to play 6-8 weeks after Champ/League is finished. It's a bit of a joke. CB have to be seen to play the games though as those who came up with the idea of a shield think its great and want it to be successful. Teams generally don't even pass much remarks on the last league games unless they are in trouble with relegation or are pushing for a League final.
Some team will have an extra bit of silverware at the end of the year but history won't judge you on your successes in this competition.

have to agree, surely the county board can come up with a way to finish the league earlier...playin league games in october is very poor form..and even in div 5...there is at least 10 games to be fulfilled, and they wont be!!!may not be of any importance but theyre there to be played to help younger lads adapt to next evel and give some older club members playin time and the league should be seen out!!!

If the league was ran properly, i.e. if county players are unavailable the match is still played, there would be no need for the shield. In other successful counties, you hear of lads injured in club games and are ruled out of county games but they just get on with it, a competitive league and championship run through the summer instead of autumn improves performance and allows other players a chance to shine. Manager's have often said to me that this would'nt work because come chamionship they would have played league without their county players and trying to bed in their players would be made harder. The more oppurtunity you give to more players to play a higher level of football might improve the squad of a club. As it currently stands, it is clubs with big squads who can cope with the loss of one or two county players who lead the league anyway.

Mouse mat the div2 final was played before the champ ever started. Playing shield games is ridiculous. It' a championship warm-up comp that happened to run too late although there were free weekends earlier when it could have been played. It's ridiculous really

SLM, Nobody cares about division 5 football. It is completely overlooked. The last league game was played 19 July. If we assume most of these lads were playing junior c champ which didnt start until 6 september, that is a complete summer month of august without football. Even if you argue that certain players, like Osnatts, would have played jun b, this still didnt start until 15 august which is basically 4 weeks. The outstanding fixtures in div 5 should have been played as warmup games for the championship during this time. I am sure these teams had warmup games of some sort. The county board cannot be held fully accountable because if the clubs had wished to play the games, they would have been played. These championships are only entering final stage now. I hope they play the finals as a double-header in Pairc Sean. It is what every player trains for, regardless of standard.

Just looking at the results from the weekend. Did Ballinamore play a division 1 league game on saturday evening and then play a shield game on sunday morning or am i reading it wrong?

You're right Aussie.
SOH requested the DIV 1 game be played last Saturday because several players are away next weekend (final round of league game were originally fixed for Oct 10th, then changed last Monday) CB agreed to change as long as Shield game also went ahead. SOH played mainly 2nd team on Sunday

434828 i see its going to be kiltubrid v SOH in the div 4 final!!!what happened leitrim gaels in the latter part of the league and the playoff???it could be a great game in the final between 2 good junior teams!!

btw slm, what happened was leitrim gaels needed two draws/ narrow wins to top the table, instead they lost by 2 points to allen gaels and kiltubrid, allowing kiltubrid to top the table!!! and they got hockeyed by SOH in the playoff.

They actually lost by one point in each game. One draw vs Kiltubrid would have put Gaels top and promoted

SOH will probably beat Kiltubrid in the junior and Manor should definately beat em in the Senior league
