The Wild Rover... I may be just hazarding a guess with your username that you may have a Crossmolina allegiance, but can you tell me if this is true because there are several stories going about that game.. Was there a Crossmolina player hospitalised after that game in '06? Because I did hear after the boot stamping incident that it was that offender that also sent a Crossmolina player to hospital in '06? and if that is true why was that not brought further? Or is it just that when these two particular teams get together that sparks fly because I do go to a lot of both teams games and can say whole heartedly last Sunday was a first for me. I might even venture to the Sweeney Cup game... should be interesting to see if the standards of refreeing also improve as I believe it is a linesman from last Sunday down to ref that game. I hope sincerely that we see improvements on all sides.

Lot of crap talking going on here. This game was always going to be messy and i discussed this with my womans father (who is a cross man). he was at the game and from his view their wasnt alot in it. simple fact now is that mayo are a man down and its their Nester Cup to loose and i believe now that they will loose it and their game in the qualifiers after that. simple fact is all the people outside ballina and cross will side with mcGarrity. people from cross will keep defending the person who hit him and ballina people (like myself) will want his head and offer up our red carded man in exchange. mayo will not gel as a team with this nasty sore in mayo club football looming over their heads. You also have to put knockmore in the fray (as they are in the group) and thats almost half the mayo pannell that will be keeping their distance from each other Conslusion: Mayo are the true loosers here: sorry boys but no silver wear this year

its time to stop alot of this nonsense about previous history between these clubs, its about now .lets hope for a speedy investigation ,

no video evidence for the assault on r mc g,plenty of evidence to put several other players from both sides on the sidelines for along time,

Less of the lies! now Ballina.Simple fact of matter is numerous unfortunate incidents took place during that game. The game is over cannot be played back again. If we could play back games we would win the all Ireland every year! But we cant. Its up to county board to investigate these matters no one else.the better team won on the day and there is no place for sore loosers or begrudgers in sport.Shake the hand of your opponent at end of game and wish them luck.

yes Villamoy, I seen the DVD this evening and no video evidence of the offence on Ronan.. however there is loads of evidence for other actions on both teams and the stamping incident was clear on the one I seen too.. cannot believe how that also went unnoticed.. However one thing I will point out that it showed several players for both teams shaking hands at the end of the game so I commend both sides on that.. I just cannot say enough.. terrible game to watch.. seems worse when see it back on DVD.. I also heard this evening that hopefully Ronan may be deemed able to show at some stage against our game against Galway.. So lets hope that he has a speedy recovery.

Action has to be taken on the player who hit ronan mc.If the incident happend on the street the fella would be locked up.Why should it be any different on a football pitch?D'ont take me up wrong if the injury happend in a challange going for the ball and was accidental thats totally different but what happend on sunday is unacceptable. If this continues to happen i can't see the county managment having any option but to stop the county players from playing during the time when the county team is involved in the championship.

The Player in question for this incident deserves a lenghty suspension. However so does a few more players from both sides. to say the rules were broken last weekend would be a major under statement

Just want to make a couple of point in relation to the previous posts...

I would be 95% sure that Ronan McGarrity will be fit enough to play against Galway, its a hairline fracture of his cheekbone and if the injury was so serious he wouldn't have stood on the sideline watching the second half of the game in his tracksuit. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery.
In response to Ballinamans post about trying to muddy the water about the stamping incident, I saw it very clearly, the Ballina player knew what he was doing, it was no accident, the Crossmolina was lying on the ground underneath him and there was intent. Its a very serious incident but because the players involved are not county players nothing more will happen about it.
In relation to the co semi final in '06 - two ballina players got sent off for striking off the ball - the wing back who has been previously mentioned and a prominent Ballina midfielder who there's been a lot of talk of this week. It brings to mind the saying "you live by the sword and die by the sword". And yes a Crossmolina player was hospitalised with a serious head injury and didnt play again for the rest of the year from a very late off the ball tackle by the ballina player involved in the stamping incident last sunday.

Finally my last point - now dont get me wrong with this and I'm not condoning violence in any way but both the Ballina and Crossmolina teams display something that is very much lacking in the Mayo senior team, a ruthlessness and a will to win at any cost. Mayo play a lovely attractive brand of football along with a lot of other counties around the country but lack that steel and ruthlessness in their play that both Crossmolina and Ballina display. look at the teams that have won all-Irelands recently and some of their players - Tyrone, Ryan McMenamin / Philip Jordan, Kerry, Paul Galvin / Dara O'Shea, Armagh, Francie Bellew / Paul McGrane. While there has been a lot of debate about the game at the weekend it showed that both teams went out there to win at any cost (and before you start on about the McGarrity incident again - there was more than 1 incident in the game and as I said before I'm not condoning violence). Its ironic that the only holders of All Ireland Senior medals in Mayo are from these two clubs and I'm afraid it will remain that way until Mayo football wakes up and realises that we will win nothing until a win at all costs mentality is instilled into the team. In 20 years time will anyone be talking about the type of players Ryan McMenamin or Paul Galvin were on the pitch - not a chance, they will be talking about how many All-Ireland medals they have to polish!!!

The latest news on this is there is a hearing into the incident by the Mayo county Board Thursday, 9th July (tonight) at 8 pm. So far, a few people have come forward to the County Board to outline what they saw but they are looking for more people to get in touch with them, before tonight's hearing if possible. They want to get as many eye witness accounts as they can so that they can build up a complete picture of what actually happened to Ronan McGarrity last Sunday. If anyone clearly saw the incident with Ronan McGarrity last Sunday, you should contact Paddy McNicholas, who is chairing the disciplinary hearing.

95% sure?? What planet are you living on?? It will take 2-3 weeks for swelling to go down.......it'll be 6 weeks before the fractures(3 of them remember), are healed, bone remodelling will occur at that stage to strenghten the new bone.....any knocks at all to the area in the 6-8wks will put you back to square one....people talk about masks...you'd be taking a huge chance to wear one before the bone has fully healed....

Crossmolinas reputation is in tatters ,the fine sportmanship and footballing achievements built painstakingly are no more.A CALLOUS COWARDLY ACT set the tone for the game so whatever happenned after is merely tit for tat.A team going nowhere with no real talent coming through are reduced to the status of a has been boxer winning with cheap shots. The managers comments after mean that he has actually joined a rabble in my opinion. The end for this team is nigh and will be painful for all admirers of a once great club. The former county forward will also be found out in this startling descent. No point in looking at the second string they are heading for Junior.

LP, You're right. There's a huge chance he'll be playing. It is not a Fractured jaw. It is a hairline fracture to the Cheekbone. These heal very quickly, very little swelling and I expect McGarrity to be playing in the Connacht Decider. Remember Kevin Kilbane? Got a fractured jaw, 5 days later, he was playing in a match-and soccer players head the ball........

Ronan McGarrity will be playing, Please God.

Reply to xxx: piece from match report on co semi final 06 - get your facts straight

"Enda Devenney, who had come on as a sub a short time earlier, was given a red card for an off-the-ball incident, and a couple of minutes later Ronan McGarrity suffered a similar fate"

In response to your post, Mayo4Sam, action will only be taken against the perpretrator if there are suffiient witnesses willing to talk to the county Board and tell them what they saw. If people who clearly say the incident do not come forward with their account, or leave it to others to come forward, then that is the surest way that this guy will get off in the absence of definitive video evidence.

It's all very well for people who saw the incident coming on here and writing about it, but thats not going to change anything or ensure justice is done. It's time for people who saw this incident to do the right thing and talk to the county board and Paddy Nicholas who are asking for more witnesses. Sometimes people have to make a stand.

LP - Dont like to get into stupid petty arguments about stuff that happened three years ago. But just for the record as per Western People 11/10/06 "Ronan McGarrity allowed his frustrations to boil over when picking up a second yellow card for lashing out as midfield opponent Gabriel Walsh" PS- If its a fight you want pick on someone else cause i have work for doing

Burbine suffers fractured cheekbone, will still play in tourney

Londonderry sophomore Alex Burbine will compete in this weekend's New Hampshire state individual tennis tournament despite suffering a broken cheekbone in school this week.

Skip Burbine, Alex's father, confirmed the injury but declined to comment on its cause.

Alex, the top seed in the tourney, is undefeated this season. His first-round match, against Portsmouth's J.T. Pearson, will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Memorial Field in Concord.

- Alan Siegel

I know tennis is non contact, but is this cause for hope? By the way, this is a cut and paste article from a US publication and nothing political should be taken from some of the place names!!!

UPDATE 4:42pm: RICHMOND has confirmed Alex Rance will miss 2-3 weeks after having surgery today.
Scans last night revealed three small fractures to Rance's cheekbone after his horrific collision with Brisbane Lion Troy Selwood in the third quarter of Richmond's loss.

His father Murray said yesterday while the accident looked horrific, the recovery time from a broken cheekbone was rapid.
