8 Left Standing in SFC

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Salthill remain the only west board team left in the last 8 of the SFC after a controversial win over Milltown in Tuam. This shows the poor selection process this year for the County Minor Panel. Several Minors from north board teams made a huge impact playing senior football today, probably none more so than Daniel Mannion who at only 16 years, had a huge game for Killererin. Caltra are the team to beat, with Salthill and Killererin a danger to all. Corofin do looked burned out after struggling against a very poor Carrarow. Ballygar will be seen by most as the weakest remaining and Tuam are the most overrated.

I think especially at underage level there does seem to be some sort of unwritten law to have so many players from both west and north boards rather than just pick the best available players no matter where they come from.

Well its wide open this year, Big shock that Caherlistrane were beaten, I heard that Bergin cleaned up for Mountbellew. Brendan V Glen was a bad enough game even though for all Brendans possesion Glen could have still won it. The same for Milltown, i couldnt understand Milltown leaving two lads up front and hanley cleaning up in front of them, if milltown had passed the ball better inthe last few minutes they could have won, Some amount of slaps in the games. Dont know how j Devanne stayed on after some of his tackles ( he didnt so a whole lot else and had gone bakc a lot) Brennan was very good for Milltown but over carrried the ball in the last 10 minutes. Armstrong is playing very well and gave some great ball into Rabbite. Dirty enough game. Annaghdown v Barna was a brutal game to watch, thought annaghdown would have gotten hammered the way it started but pulled away in the end.. Tuam V MB's, thought it would be a good game and it lived up to it. MB's could have had a goal in the first minute, tuam got their act together and played some good football but i have to say i was well impressed with MB's, they must have done serious amount of training to be that fit because they just all went forward even the full back when they had the ball! tuam backs did well to contain them, in the 2nd half it was all MB's and they got their running game going but Tuam just about hung on with 14 men after Tony Costelloe was sent off, didnt see what happened but the ref seemed to let Mb's off with a lot esp the body checks after the ball was passed. MB's drove forward looking for a goal but it never came even though they hit the side net in the last 2 mins. Feel sorry for MB's as they looked a good side and will be a threat if they keep at it next year. Best game i saw this weekend though Didnt see the corofin game but sounded like they scrapped past From what i say id say Salthill look the team to beat, didnt see Caltra or Killererin so cant comment on them

What happened in the Salthill v Milltown match?

I was in Salthill on Saturday. In the first match Barna were up 1-5 to 2 points early in the second half. They then played 13 behind the ball. Awful to watch. Annaghdown came back to level 8 point to 1-5. Barna only scored one point from a free in extra time. I think they went 40 minutes with out scoring. Finished 12 points to 1-6

Second game was a lot better. Tuam in the first half were class, great movement, great scores (I think all the forwards scored from play). Michael Breatnachs were not them self's in the first half they had a great chance of a goal early on but Doc made a great double save. When Tuam's centre half back got sent off - he was playing well - Michael Breatnachs came back into it. Just ran outta time in the end. Finished 1-13 to 14. Michael Breatnachs are now out and Corofin are in the ¼'s.

Mountbellew have to be up there now as one of the favourites... they have a strong young team with the likes of Bergin there to help them along.
I say but your money on them as they look very hungry!
Not sure how good Tuam are but Ive heard great things about them. Does anyone know when the qfinal draw is on?
Mount b and Caltra would be some battle! with Mount b coming out on top.

Jackose, dont know what game you were watching in tuam but in my opinion armstrong was awful. looked completely disinterested as if he didnt want to be there. maybe he was afraid of mullahy who had great game- should be starting for galway. it was salthill's backs who won the game for them particularly finian hanley who was class and kevin conlon. referee was brutal, had no control over game. first time i have ever seen a melee where the same number of players from both teams weren't sent off. referee looked far from inter county standard.

You're right JD Mullahy was class, he looked more of a threat up front than most of the other forward, he could have gotten the equaliser if he was given a right pass near the End, JD are you a milltown man, what has happened to John Devanne (unless you are him JD!!!) he used to be a serious player but has put on a lot of weight.

I thought when armstomg did the get the ball he did well, and either hit rabbite with a pass or took on his man,

Ref was very poor and seemed more concerned with blowing for the ball being picked up off the ground than the belting that was going on.

I was in Pearse Stadium yesterday for the double header. I decided to bring my new girlfriend there as she is a rugby head essentially. It wasn't too bad an afternoon really as both games were close enough but the standard wasn't great at the same time but i guess the conditions werent great.
Moycullen were a few cans short of a six pack but can have hope for the future with the likes of the Bradshaws and Lydon. I can't see Killererin winning it out this year either but like Moycullen they too have up and coming players.
Carraroe and corofin proved a more interesting match for herself as she said she knew players on both teams and i have my suspicions as to how well she knows them. I would know alot of these lads myself but I found it hard to recognise them yesterday. For a start, the carraroe team seemed really young and I only recognised about 6 or so in total. No Sean O domhnaill, no martin o congille or richie o hara even on the panel and ciaran de paor didnt start.
The Corofin team was odd, Hanly is only back from injury and seemed tired early enough and Kieran McGrath is a back even though he did alright. I still think corofin will at least make the final as they have loads of talent. Carraroe never looked like winning it though they battled well. When we were leaving the stadium I asked the girlfriend if she would fancy coming to another match which she replied, maybe next year. So does that mean she likes me or that she hated the footy?? Still cheap day out!
