Hand on Heart....Our National Anthem??

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

to be honest its a rant based on hatred, if you have a problem with the english anthem you should have a problem with the irish one or like most people you accept your own hatred and ridicule everyone elses- typical of the gaa following in fairness, funny those who like it most have no claim to it.... funny :)

The Irish is the translation actually. But you being so patriotic would know that.

i never learnt it in school i think we mite have been told to in 1st year but i never bothered. It was only later on when i was playing in a match where the national anthem was being played and i only knew how to hum it i took it upon myself to learn it. Printed out the words and put the wolftones verson onto my ipod.
Im proud to know to it now and personally dont mind the cheering before the end of the anthem adds a bit of atmosphere to the crowd.

But any match i go to everyone always has different pronunciations of it, i just stick to how the wolfetones sung it when i learnt it:)

Know it as Gaeilge, the only way it should be known! Asked the teacher to teach it to us in 5th class.

You call it a rant based on hatred, well I couldn't imagine where the inspiration for the words would have come from! Anyway God Save the King (Queen) was written during the time of war between England and Scotland, so its based during a time of war, on the other side Flower of Scotland remembers the Battle of Bannockburn, a Scottish victory over England. Thats just two exaples.

Amhrán na bhFiann is a great anthem and sing it with pride
