Hand on Heart....Our National Anthem??

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Not trying to be a WUM here but I actually heard that as well Paddyogall. Don't know if it was a joke or not but what's the story there? How many times would Tyrone have played games where it was played before 2003???

Some very honest replies so far.... very interesting! It just shows how strange our little island is... we're messed up on so many levels... it fascinates me to be honest... we can be so full of BS sometimes...! We go on about our Irish Pride! but a huge proportion of people cant utter a couple of lines from our National Anthem....!

Fair play for the honest answers...

Learnt it both languages. Are people in the Republic not taught it in school?

Paddyogall, the Tyrone panel learnt it in 2003 as they felt it would be a good way to bond the team. I believe they learnt it phonetically and long before the night before the final!!

Was very proud to see them belting it out that year and every year since.

Are you calling me a WUM?? how dare you if you are! I'm anything but :) I was pretty sure it was the Night before the All Ireland final, It was in some Documentary about how instead of discussing tactics about the final they were up trying to learn the athem

Not calling you a WUM at all Paddy! Far from it! :)

Thanks for that Goodfella, you'll settled that story anyway. We learnt it in national/primary school in 5th or 6th class as far as I remember. And I'm pretty sure everyone in Kerry learnt it in national/primary school also. Don't know anyone in their 20's or below from Kerry that doesn't know it in Irish. I don't know it in English but I could translate it (roughly) if needed.

Bannnas ... you got the last line wrong as usual ... its "Come On Da DUUUUBBBBBBSSSSS !!!!" Reminds me of the gag where the little old lady won the Dirty Limerick competition and was asked to recite in on Radio. Because she was a bit embarassed she said she would just say "La La" for the dirty bits so off she goes with: La La La La La La La La La La La Lala La La La La La La La La La La ... you effin *%^&*x Know our anthem in Irish since I was a gossur and would have a fairly good idea in English but might have to stop and try a rough translation ... especially the bit about manning the gap (bearna) etc. is where I get stuck in English.

I know it but i notice at alot of games i go to(except ulster games) that no one sings it. At some games when you sing it you get funny looks and when it is in croker you get most people staring at the big screen and then pronouncing the words in the worse irish possible.

I know all the words. What shocks me is the amount of people who don't know how to salute it, be it at a GAA match, rugby or soccer international. As we know, everyone is supposed to face the tri colour, but few do!! I often find myself turned in the opposite direction facing the flag and everyone else looking at the half way :S

I learned it myself though, never taught it in school

Know it in Irish and English and find it very disrespectful when people shout way before the end of it. Yhis doesn't happen at soccer or rugby games but yet always happens before our national games. (I actually started a thread on this a few months ago and most people seemed to have no problem with people shouting half way through)

my whole family sing it loud and proud at every match. its one of my pet hates when people start cheering before the end, how did that ever start?

I know it in Irish, but not in English.

Terrible lyrics anyway.

I didn't know a version existed in English ;)
Never learned it at school (and I went to school in a Gaelthacht!) 'coz the headmaster was a cultureless yop, but I did learn it at an Irish college in the darkest heart of Connemara.

Along with the Walls of Limerick, and an tuiseal ginideach.
